Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin IPA

A tangy twist on the San Diego brewery’s award-winning India pale ale

As temperatures rise and summertime vibes begin to peak, fruit-infused beers become increasingly more appealing for their crisp and refreshing nature. Finding a well-balanced summer brew can be problematic, though, as the sweetness oftentimes overpowers the herbal, hoppy bite that beer-lovers crave. To avoid entering cider territory, San Diego-based brewery Ballast Point decided to skip the typical sugary citrus tones and opted for the more refined tang of grapefruit, resulting in the Grapefruit Sculpin IPA—the brewery’s latest update on its award-winning India pale ale.

The Grapefruit Sculpin retains its IPA character through its hoppy bitterness—though not overwhelming—while introducing a hint of grapefruit, building over the course of each sip. It’s tart and thirst-quenching enough to throw back a few, even for those who aren’t necessarily into IPAs. Like the original, the Grapefruit Sculpin hovers at a 7% abv, 70 IBUs and pairs well with all kinds of dishes—especially Caribbean flavors.

Available year-round in both 12-ounce cans and bottles, Grapefruit Sculpin can be found at craft beer retailers for $16 per six-pack.
