Nest Tees

by Ami Kealoha

nesttees.jpgNest introduces a line of limited edition artist tees to help benefit Art Start, a non-profit dedicated to arts education for underserved children and teens. The collection launched at the pop-up Wired store last Friday and participating artists include Joel Dugan (his characteristic nautically themed octopus design is pictured here), Jackie Gendel, Anne Hall, Martin Mazorra, and Scott Rosenberg and all tees are made using labor and eco-friendly practices by Pigeon Ex.

Available at the Wired store or at Pigeon-Ex's new retail space in Fort Greene (opening this Friday), which will also carry a Nest-produced line that redesigns the Students for a Free Tibet logo to benefit the organization. Online the tees run $30 at Nest.

by Ami Kealoha

decorader.jpg

A 3-D take on the wall mural, these kits from Brooklyn-based artists Elisheva Biernoff and Jennifer Smith come with sculptural wall ornaments, paint, instructions, and everything else needed to create themed decor. Their debut design, "South" features wooden oranges to affix to cartoon-like trees, while the latest, "North" (pictured above), includes a pair of owls and carbon transfers. Look out for upcoming editions, "East" and "West." For the less crafty or time-crunched, Biernoff and Smith will create custom pieces in your home.

Available for $50 from Decoradar.

TileToy

by Ami Kealoha

tiletoy.jpg

Created by Finnish media artist and designer Tuomo Tammenpää along with Brit mobile game developer Daniel Blackburn, TileToy is a modular, re-programmable LED toy. A sleek white plastic box encases the LED components and each magnetic cube communicates wirelessly, enabling a wide variety of games - from anagrams to arithmetic problems - that use numbers, letters, or shapes. Still in prototype stage, inventors plan to keep TileToy hardware and code open-source and have been conducting DIY workshops.

Brinco Sneakers

by Ami Kealoha

brinco.jpg

Although only 1000 of these shoes were made, these limited edition sneakers are more about art than footwear. Featured in the Printed Matter booth at Art Basel and designed by Argentine-born artist Judi Werthein, Brincos were created for migrant workers crossing the U.S./Mexico border. Each pair comes with a flashlight and compass attached to the shoelaces, a small pocket in the tongue for money or pain relievers, and a map of the border printed on the removable insole. With a Mexican-flag colorway, the pattern on the heel represents the Mexican eagle and the design on the toe hails from the American eagle found on quarter dollars. A small portrait of the Vatican-approved patron saint of migrants, St. Toribio Romo Gonzalez, adorns the back ankle.

While Brincos can be purchased from Printed Matter for $215, Werthein mostly distributes them for free at border crossings.

Scope Art Fair

by Evan Orensten

Scopr-Header

Scope presented as impressive a show as we've come to expect from their fairs. I appreciate the economics of including smaller galleries and less expensive work (the kind I can actually afford to buy), though I prefer a tent or hall to the difficult to navigate, overcrowded rooms and hallways of a hotel. The 70+ galleries from around the world presented works by some of my favorite artists and as always I discovered works by several artists new to me. Definitely a highlight of this art-filled week. A few images after the jump.
