Slater Bradley at Taka Ishii Gallery
by Ami Kealoha
New York-based artist Slater Bradley debuts his new work that documents a young man posing as a Storm Trooper at a Star Wars convention at Taka Ishii gallery's new space in Tokyo today. Titled Uncharted Settlements III and running through 10 December, the subject of the snapshot-like photos add a geek culture edge to Bradley's exploration of themes like youthful obsession, fandom, impersonation, and celebrity - previous pieces have involved dressing up a friend as Kurt Cobain and Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. Like that work, images vacillate between idolatry and mocking humor. A limited edition portfolio of 16 c-prints is available through the gallery.
Chocolate Show Roundup
by Evan Orensten
Highlights from the Chocolate Show, in NYC until 11/13/2005.
Bissinger's has just launched a line of dark chocolate covered seeds and nuts they call Naturals. The Black Sesame Crunch is one of the best things I've tasted recently. Crunchy, savory, handmade...they are high in antioxidants and protein and low in sugar and carbs. The bag disappered within two minutes at CH HQ. Available online and at some Whole Foods. $7 for a 5 oz. bag.
Chocolove has been committed to great tasting, high quality, reasonably priced dark chocolate for ten years. When some of the employees were saying how much they missed the old days they came up with a dream bar of milk chocolate with toffee and almonds. They convinced the chocolatier to whip up some samples and it quickly evolved into the new Toffee & Almonds in 33% Milk Chocolate bar. Be careful, it's highly addictive. Currently available online at Chocolove; 12 3.2 oz. bars for $20, and appearing in a store near you or from other online retailers.
This Week at Refinery29
by Josh Rubin
This week at Refinery29 , get an offbeat tour of the Lower East Side, courtesy of Some Odd Rubies' Odessa Whitmire. Then head over to Brooklyn where the designers known as Octopi put their art school pedigree to good use, sculpting dynamic clothing for the young Williamsburg set. Swedish import H.Frederiksson's clothing has travelled all over the world on the backs of famous collaborators such as the Scissor Sisters. And finally we end in Paris, where 50 years ago the famous Chanel 2.55 bag revolutionized the way we look at purses, becoming the fashion icon it is today.
This Week in Tropolism
by Josh Rubin
It was a week of beginnings, with one ending. AMO (OMA, when they're not picking up redlines) begins a study for the Hermitage, an Olafur Eliasson show begins in Japan, a couple of show openings, and Tokyo retail rebirths abound! And, of course, we say farewell to Emigre, at issue 69.
Trendwatching Seminar
by Josh Rubin

As you know, Cool Hunting is a daily update on things we like. Despite the name, we don't report on trends. Yesterday I (along with Spear and others in the blogosphere) experienced one of Reinier Evers' Trendwatching seminars. I've been a subscriber of the Trendwatching.com newsletter for years, but this was the first seminar I've attended. If you're in need of a quick, high-impact trend review, definitely catch him in a city near you.
