Cut and Paste: Design Competition Call for Entry

by Josh Rubin

Cut and Paste, a digital media design competition. We're now proud to say we've joined them as a sponsor.

So what is it? "The contest is an homage to DJ battles, dance-offs and graffiti artists," says Justin Kim, one of the contest’s founders. “We want the artists involved to flex a different creative muscle than they are used to.” The event will be lots of fun, but it's a serious competition with some fantastic judges-- Tristan Eaton, Founder of Thunderdog Studios; Kendrick Reid, Vice President of On-Air Design at Comedy Central; Doug Jaeger, Creative Director of thehappycorp global; and Jeff Staple, Founder of Staple Design.

For more details and entry instructions, go to cutandpastecontest.com. Entries will be accepted until 4 November.

Shop Gentei

by Ami Kealoha

shopgentei.jpgshopgentei1.jpg

Shop Gentei, the concept store that opened October 1st in Baltimore, Maryland is the brainchild of 28-year old designer Oliver Jones. Two years in the making, Jones waited until Baltimore's scene could support a themed boutique - currently Military, the theme will change bi-annually - that carries limited edition sneakers and off-the-beaten-path streetwear, like his own Slyandrobby line and Japan's Mackdaddy. Thanks to Jones' four-year stint in Japan, every Japanese brand Gentei carries is exclusive to the U.S., including the standout AG and the distinctly Japanese jewelry line Garni. If you're not planning a trip to Baltimore anytime soon, Gentei's plans for an online store are in the works.

Thanks to A Silent Flute for the tip.

Peace Magnets

by Josh Rubin

Vt-Peace-Camo Vt-Peace-Orange

Leave it to a Vermonter to come up with an alternative to the ubiquitous yellow Support Our Troops car magnets. Bennington based Rob Sperber makes the magnets by hand simply with the goal of raising awareness-- "I'm not against the troops - I'm against senseless killing. A lot of people feel the same as I do."

The magnets are available in 6" and 8" diameters and a variety of colors and patterns for prices ranging from $3.50 - $6.00, all at vermontpeaceworks.org

Pixel Pusher

by Carol T Chung

KF-pixelPusher.jpg

Ahh... To all the web designers out there (or any other type of designer for that matter) who's known what it's like to spend hours moving something a little bit to the right or a little bit to the left, up, down or slightly free transformed an image all over only to not apply it in the end, this shirt is for you! Or perhaps someone you would hold dear, if they could just tear themselves away from the screen and stop indulging in whatever minimal OCD behavior they have within. Look for it at Kotton Fibers.

Wolf Parade

by Ami Kealoha

wolfparade.jpgWolf Parade is the latest Montreal export worth more than a listen. Their first full-length album, Apologies to the Queen Mary, is a driving mix of indie backbeats with psychedelic, artsy, and electronic influences. Like the oft-compared Arcade Fire, the upshot is an eclectic yet tightly produced answer to all the retro rock of late and the vocals share more than a little bit with the pathos of fellow Canadians Death From Above 1979. An apt description of the balanced music comes from their own lyrics opening the track "This Heart's on Fire": Sometimes we rock and roll/Sometimes we stay at home/And it's just fine."

Pick up their album and merch from Sub Pop.
