<itunes:summary>Last month, Santa Monica's pier hosted 12 hours of performance and installation art, attracting 200,000 revelers for Glow, a public light and sound extravaganza in the style of Paris' Nuit Blanche. This video navigates through both the throngs of people (almost more notable than the art itself) and the many luminous installations dotting the beach and boardwalk.

At the far end, Infranatural unveiled "The Amazing Mental Scope," which reads the viewer's emotions and translates them into changing colors on the body of the telescope. Skyglow (Jeff Cain) offered some respite from the crowd, projecting aerial footage of Los Angeles onto the ceiling of a room, which actually required you to stop moving and lie down.

Other crowd-pleasers included Dunnage Ball (Peter Tolkin Projects), a sort of illuminated, modern moon-bounce, and Usman Haque's show-stopper "Primal Source." Yes, that's the one with the projections onto the big wall of water that everyone pointed and gasped at.

Not featured in our video, but still worth noting, is the award for the best use of glow sticks, which goes to Illumination Migration (Frank Rozasy). Nine hundred and fifty glow sticks were stuck in the sand and rearranged over the course of the night in accordance with the change in tide and migration of grunions.

Her commercial work for clients such as The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Nest, W, GQ, Tokion, Penthouse, Nylon, Flaunt, wallpaper* and others shares a similarly serenely meditative quality, capturing the quiet beauty of scenes that would otherwise likely go unnoticed. Currently teaching at Yale, as well as continuing her fine art and commercial pursuits, Lisa took us on a trip to revisit the shots she took at Governer's Island for a 2003 monograph on the former Coast Guard base. We found several of the sites she captured, including a bus stop, an elementary school drinking fountain, bowling alley lanes and a Burger King sign. <itunes:summary> Starting with Philip Johnson's acclaimed IDS Tower in 1972 (which is still, perhaps, one of the best looking skyscrapers in the country) Minneapolis has seen architecture play an increasingly important role in the fabric of the city.

Recent buildings by Jean Nouvel, Bruce Dayton, Frank Gehry, Cesar Pelli, Herzog and de Meuron as well as classics by Minoru Yamasaki and Associates, Gunnar Birkerts and Ralph Rapson are making the City of Lakes also the City of Architecture. This video surveys some of the buildings that have transformed the cityscape as a result of the city's considerable investment in its skyline.

John Comazzi, a University of Minnesota Architecture professor, guides us around these Minneapolis landmarks, revealing some of the more interesting architectural details, facts and marvels. We start at the Walker Art Center's new addition by Herzog and de Meuron and conclude, fittingly, backstage at the new Guthrie Theatre building designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, who had this to say about the project: At the heart of the city, the Guthrie is a machine for capturing and radiating the enveloping vistas. It condenses the landscape that unfolds around it.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This episode features E*rock, the musician and artist who co-founded the record label Audio Dregs with his brother nearly 10 years ago. In that time he has not only become one of experimental electronic music's most important figures but also generously contributed many, many songs to early soundtracks of Cool Hunting's videos. If you were watching back then and liked the melodic sounds you heard, Audio Dregs was probably responsible for them. In this video, we visit him in his Portland home and studio, look at some of the album covers he designed, check out a zine he publishes, watch a few flash-based videos he directed and go on a bike ride. He also shares an unreleased track and weighs-in on headphone music, using digital tools and running a record label like an art collective.</itunes:summary>

Jason is a painter, sculptor, installation artist and recently a film maker. In this episode of Cool Hunting Video we travel to his studio in Hoboken, NJ to see the labor intensive (and highly toxic) process of making one of his shimmering resin paintings—in this case in a style he calls "nipple paintings" for the bumps he makes on the metal surface. Cool Hunting Video's 61st episode shows Herbert making field recordings inside caves and up in a hot air balloon, among other unconventional locales, sits down with the innovator in NYC for an interview and catches live show at Irving Plaza. From Troika's tech-enabled activism to Dodi's "little worlds" and Social Suicide's pairing of irreverence with traditional English tailoring, we found that London, and each specific neighborhood, has everything to do with what these artists and designers do and their creative process. Episode 58 is a glimpse of London today—or at least as much of this massive city as you can fit into 3:34.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>Dodi Wexler</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>In this video, CH visits the studio of Dodi Wexler, an American expat living in London, who creates finely detailed works out of materials like paper scraps, vintage stamps, beads and water bottle caps. The finished pieces almost always take on nebulous organic shapes and are usually collage-based, whether it's a spiraling gold-flecked map of Rome or a massive weaving of tiny paper strips that Dodi painstakingly glues together. Her handmade aesthetic reflects both an appreciation of found materials and intensively obsessive process. </itunes:summary>

For episode 55, CH joined the party that kicked-off their national series at a Brooklyn warehouse-turned-club to document eight of the best young New York designers duking it out on stage. <itunes:subtitle>Social Suicide</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Pairing impeccable tailoring with biting irreverence, the London-based label Social Suicide is reinventing men's fashion, one suit at a time. Using the classic male get-up as a canvas—including all its allusions to money, power and war—every piece in their line has its own story about masculinity and modern culture. By collaborating with Joe Morgan and Roy Chittleborough, the same tailors that realized the creativity of legendary British designer Tommy Nutter, Social Suicide is as committed to extending the tradition of British suit-making as it is to upending it. When CH first came across Social Suicide's wicked sartorial humor earlier this year, it was love at first sight. In episode 54, CH visits Matt Grey (aka Tig) and Simon Waterfall, the two longtime mates behind the nearly year-old brand, at their schoolhouse bell tower-turned-studio in East London to get an exclusive tour of their collection. From the gray "Shark" suit with subtle rose pink gils to Simon and Tig's comedic and brotherly rapport, CH's latest video installment is an intimate look at an exceedingly clever and totally genuine young label. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Takeo Okamoto, an established sushi chef in his native Japan discovered his calling for ice sculpture and moved to the iciest place he could think of, Alaska. Winner of several international awards, including a Silver Medal in the 1998 Olympics, Takeo now runs Okamoto Studio with his son Shintaro in New York City. We were introduced to them through Jeremy Mangan, an artist whose coffee paintings we admired. When we spoke with Jeremy he mentioned that he also sculpts ice—he's in fact Okamoto's principal carver—the result of Jeremy and Shintaro having met in an art class at Hunter College. We decided right away to make a video of the studio and, after some deliberation, we realized CH mascots Otis and Logan would make the perfect subjects for a video and a great feature at our 50th Episode party. Guests were treated to the breathtaking sculptures of the Sealyham Terriers themselves and to raw footage from the video of them being made. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Designers have long been plagiarizing nature's organic shapes and colors, but even the most creative don't rival the ingenious, stunning—and in this case peculiar—examples of flora and fauna. A celebrity of the plant world, the Amorphophallus Titanum, or "the corpse flower," is a rare bloom that's native to Indonesia and known for the extreme smell that it emits when it opens. Last week at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, "the Titan," as it's also sometimes known, bloomed for the first time in New York since 1939. Cultivated from seed for over 10 years, the plant grows at a rate of up to six inches daily in its final days, emits the infamous odor for approximately eight hours, and collapses in a matter of days. Cool Hunting's 46th episode takes you on site to see the flower up close, and hear the curator, vice president, botanist and security guard at Brooklyn's botanical gardens share their personal experiences and the history of one of the most bizarre natural wonders of the world.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:author>Cool Hunting and Missing Pieces</itunes:author>
<itunes:subtitle>BAP Lab Part 1</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>A project of the Bushwick Art Project, BAP Lab is a curated, one-day event (just over 14 hours to be exact) that brings together over 80 different new media artists, musicians, performers, DJs, and visual artists in Brooklyn. On 22 July 2006 the second annual BAP Lab took place in a 20,000 square-square foot warehouse that's been converted into community space for artists called 3rd Ward. For CH's 44th video, we highlighted six of the artists there, who all make work best filed under the catch-all "New Media" genre. Playing with notions of time, vision, and technology, the episode includes Jamie Burkart's project called "Time is Long," which records viewers on a VHS tape that he's extended out of the VCR and through the heart of the gallery, so that the image plays back on another monitor 20 minutes later. Also making use of a video monitor and passé technology, Gregory Shakar's interactive "Analog Color Field Computer" allows the user to produce pure fields of color on monitors and manipulate corresponding pure tones. With a near microscopic perspective, Ernesto Klar's "Convergenze Parallele" uses custom-designed software to trace patterns of dust particles and amplify their movements sonically and visually. These and the other three artists in this episode are only the first segment of our two-part coverage of this new independent and inspiring festival.</itunes:summary>

There and in an interview, he shared some tips and gave us a little insight into his current collecting habits, which naturally show up on An Announcement. The disc—a laid-back journey through jazz, funk, hip hop, and soul—are what you'd expect from a musician who's traveled throughout Africa and Puerto Rico, creating and recording much of his album on the road.
