Being bored in Berlin is really difficult. After playing a major role in German (and indeed world) history, the city is now home to thriving creative industries. A cultural and political capital with an international, cosmopolitan vibe, Berlin can be overwhelming for visitors and locals alike—the amount of art, design and creative dining options are staggering. Luckily, design editor Viviane Stappmanns and publisher Kristina Leipold compiled all of Berlin's best design-centric spots in paperback, "The Berlin Design Guide." The book features local-level information about galleries, spaces, public installations, stores and the best places to unwind with a beer after a big day in the city.

The guide is divided into five color-coded, easy-to-use sections. An introduction chapter provides some context and insight into the urban condition of the city. With such a storied history, such an introduction is especially necessary. From examining the political conditions of various decades of social housing to the role of the Berlin Wall, the guide allows the user to not only explore the city, but also to understand it. Subsequent sections highlight a curated yet expansive offering of the city's art, fashion, design and hospitality hotspots. Sprinkled throughout are behind-the-scenes photos and interviews with the city's creatives. This personal touch not only makes visiting said places seem imperative, it gives the guide a charmingly personal tinge.

After compiling acclaimed creative guides to both Sydney and Melbourne, Stappmanns is a trusted source for design-minded travelers. With such a high density of creatives, this guide is a useful tool for visitors and Berliners alike. "The Berlin Design Guide" is available from Amazon for $22 online.
