Pousada Bromélias

While plenty of hotels rely on luxurious gimmicks and flashy design, elegantly authentic and hospitable places like Pousada Bromélias are harder to come by—in this case, literally. Driving up the washed-out road just outside of Paraty, Brazil is not for the faint of heart, but after bumping along roads through lush green fields dotted with boulders and white flowers, the friendliest staff imaginable greets visitors making it easy to settle in.

Blending seamlessly with the natural jungle setting, the landscaping and stonework create paths that lead to the various facilities and the private bungalows (there are only 10 total) spread out over the several acres of the property. All of the rooms are furnished in a humble style befitting of the setting and come with terraces and views, but only the spacious luxury class gets air conditioning and a jacuzzi, along with a few other perks. Most standard amenities, including televisions and Wifi (albeit somewhat slow), are provided for, but there's plenty else to enjoy at Bromélias.

Perhaps the most unusual and wonderful part of the small resort is the mountain stream that creates a small plunge pool and waterfall just outside of the wood-fired sauna and massage room. In addition to the spa, guests can enjoy a pool (also with its own waterfall), tennis courts, game room and gym.

Meals served in the restaurant's laid-back dining room feature an extensive menu of food all prepared daily with fresh local ingredients, including organic herbs grown in their own garden.

Rack rates for standard bungalows start at R$325 (currently about $146) nightly. To book, contact Bromélias by calling 55 24 3371 2791 or emailing reservas [at] pousadabromelias [dot] com [dot] br.
