Detroit is known for many things; from the revolutionary sounds of Motown to the hum of the American automotive industry, but it's no secret that the city has fallen on hard times. While the surface may appear bleak, there is an ongoing renaissance in the Motor City—with a revived food scene, newly minted premium goods manufacturing companies and more art galleries than you can shake a dipstick at. Our newly launched City Guides series—made possible by Lexus—profiles the best urban hotspots across the country as well suggestions for a road trip when a change of scenery is in order. Our guide to Detroit does the Motor City's resurgence justice by profiling the best food, shops, outdoor art, green spaces and architectural diamonds in the rough that the city has to offer. We even give readers the lowdown on Traverse City, the vacation hotspot to the north that boasts white sand beaches and brilliant blue water.

The city is known historically for its manufacturing sector, and Shinola—producers of watches, bicycles, leather goods and all around high-quality products—is looking to regain that reputation. The Shinola store, located in midtown, is a great place to see what's on offer in the ever-growing maker culture in the city. A few blocks away, stop by Avalon International Breads for a warm treat right out of the oven. Their breads are distributed throughout the city for a range of cafés and restaurants, but the best place to get them is right from the source. You'll have to head out to the suburb of Bloomfield Hills to see the early American modern architecture of Cranbrook, a private prep school considered to have some of the most inspirational architecture in the city.

Our City Guides feature the best of dining, shopping, culture and outdoor activities of cities across the US with new venues and locations always in the works. Browse our tips for Detroit and keep checking back for the newest finds in urban excellence from the CH team.
