Premium basics built in California with the creative individual in mind

As a former graphic designer in the creative hub of San Francisco, Ryan Donahue watched as his wardrobe and those of his friends working in similar industries slowly shifted towards a more casual, yet refined taste. Consisting of a crisp T-shirt and perfectly worn denim, this "modern workwear uniform," as Donahue calls it, has quickly replaced the more formal workplace attire of years past. So, as to supply the individuals ascribing to this aesthetic, Donahue cofounded Pickwick & Weller, makers of premium basics for men and women. Backed and advised by the likes of Steven Allen and Warby Parker cofounder Dave Gilboa, Pickwick & Weller launched earlier this week with a modest range of T-shirts available in multiple fits, styles and colorways. All made in Los Angeles.

While the idea may not be entirely novel, the execution is spot on. For men, we see a classic crew neck, v-neck and henley. While women get a few more options with the addition of a tank top, swoop neck t and a few slightly thicker silhouettes. By offering three fits of each style for women—classic, long and a boxier boyfriend fit—and two for men—classic and slim—Pickwick & Weller appeals to most everyone, not just the stereotypically skinny designer. And if you're not certain what size is best for you, today Pickwick & Weller introduces their "try it on" program to offer curious customers a chance to see and feel a range of styles and colors first hand before committing.

As for material, the line is made from 100% Supima cotton grown just outside L.A. in Bakersfield. Bardell and Hart, from the women's collection, are made from pure Tencel jersey. After giving the men's T-shirts a go, we felt the medium weight cotton close to ideal in terms of fit and feel. The extremely soft cotton lays nicely on the body and isn't too sheer, making it good for a stand alone top or a nice layering piece.

Pickwill & Weller women's garments sell for between $38 and $58 depending on material and style, while the men's offerings range from $45 to $52.
