When it comes to sneakers, it’s near impossible to beat a classic, especially for kicking around on summer days. As an ode to American craftsmanship and design, Boston-based running shoe pioneers New Balance and purveyors of contemporary American style J. Crew teamed up for a limited edition Independence Day 998. The classic New Balance 998 design—a longtime favorite of runners and sneaker-heads alike for its comfort and ultra-plush Absorb sole—was given the J. Crew design treatment in NYC, then manufactured in New Balance’s Skowhegan, Maine factory. Both brands’ commitment to detail and quality is felt permeating the shoe, with doses of suede and matte synthetics carefully distributed throughout. Of course, red, white and blue play a strong role—but these shoes will look fresh long after the last fireworks fade.

Pick up the special Independence Day edition J. Crew x New Balance 998s for $175 on 14 June at the Liquor Store in New York, The Grove in Los Angeles, and On Lan in Hong Kong. Plus, the first 20 lucky buyers will receive an exclusive 1776 hat from Ebbets Field Flannels. A widespread release of the freedom kicks will hit J. Crew online and in stores across the US, UK and Hong Kong on 18 June.
