Throughout the holiday season, festive get-togethers are about as bountiful as Black Friday sales. Whether it’s an office party, meeting the in-laws or a New Year’s Eve bash, dressing for the occasion is a necessity. To avoid falling into the ugly sweater trap, we caught up with Dwight Fenton, Vice President of Design at luxury menswear label Bonobos for his tips on styling out in the holiday spirit without looking like a yuletide goofball. “You can look festive without relying on something kitschy,” Fenton says with a laugh, “Use existing parts of your wardrobe combined with something that pops.” Bonobos is known for incorporating bold colors throughout their line year-round and their holiday wear is no exception. Melding classic pieces with modern styling, Bonobos’ complete line of menswear will keep you looking fresh well into 2014. Here are a few tips on how to nail the look this holiday season.

“Dark denim is an excellent base for just about any look,” Fenton tells us. Take the Bonobos’ classic blue jean in dark resin in a slim straight cut and go from there. With a cut that’s not too slim yet not too loose, Bonobos lives up to its reputation for a comfortable yet trim fit. Best of all, the sturdy White Oak Cone Denim only improves with age. “Dark denim is casual enough for partying with friends but can be easily dressed up with a blazer for more formal occasions,” says Fenton.

For a three-season blazer—a perfect fit for the the holidays throughout the colder months—look no further than the Mulroy blazer in Donegal tweed. “Tweed adds a rich texture that’s very holiday appropriate,” Fenton explains, “It’s festive, warm and seasonal all at once.” Seeking the finest tweed available, Bonobos designers went to the original source in Donegal county in Ireland, where locally raised wool has been used for centuries to create the timeless fabric.

To complete the holiday look, Fenton suggests adding something eye-catching—whether it’s a patterned shirt or tartan tie. “A chambray shirt with a tartan tie is a great combination,” Fenton says, “The chambray adds texture while the tartan gives the outfit a bit of pop—it’s more of subtle nod to the holidays.” The Mill River chambray shirt is constructed of premium Japanese dark chambray, cut in a comfortable yet flattering slim style. For that dose of holiday cheer, the Cameron tie is festive without being over-the-top. If ties aren’t your thing, switch up with a pocket square or tartan bow tie to achieve the same aesthetic. Fenton says, “The holidays are about having fun, so take a few risks and try something new—just stay away from ties with a battery pack.”
