Australian surf outfitter The Critical Slide Society is accustomed to doing things differently. While most surf companies chase after world tour stars to rep their gear, The Critical Slide Society (TCSS) opts for free-spirited longboarders who would rather be landlocked than surf a competition heat. TCSS continues its contrarian yet fun-focused approach to surf style with the Bespoke Aloha Goods project; offering custom, made-to-order boardies in their signature retro style.

We hooked up with TCSS design director Rama McCabe for a pair of custom boardshorts, cut to our specifications, with a bit of McCabe's signature aesthetic thrown in. With a shorter cut hitting about two inches above the knee, the styling of the boardies is just right for relaxed summer days at the beach. Our favorite aspect is the cut of the leg opening: While most retro-inspired trunks on the market adopt a slim fit, these shorts remain wide enough in the leg for full mobility—a plus when you're dropping in on an overhead wave or just reaching for a cool drink. Meanwhile, the lightweight cotton constructions gives the shorts a soft, yet durable feel.

Initially launched in May in Tokyo, TCSS is ramping up for a North American event where customers will chose between a range of patterns. All of the shorts are made-to-order and include a carry-case made from leftover fabric. Keep an eye on the TCSS blog for upcoming Bespoke Aloha Goods events.
