Soundgarden: Black Hole Sun
on 18 May 2017
After playing a show in Detroit last night, Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell sadly passed away at just 52 years old. Cornell—who was also the lead vocalist and songwriter for Audioslave—founded Soundgarden in 1984 with Kim Thayil and Hiro Yamamoto. In 1999, when Soundgarden announced its break-up, Cornell went on to release solo music, though they reunited in 2010. Last night was their final show together. The band's 1994 album (their fourth) Superunknown spawned the single, "Black Hole Sun"—a song Cornell apparently wrote in 15 minutes and wasn't confident the rest of the band would like. It's become their best-known and has been covered by countless artists across various genres, reflecting Cornell's immense talent and legacy.
