United Airlines Will Fuel a Flight With Farm Waste

Later this summer, United Airlines will fuel one of its flights with farm waste and oils derived from animal fats—giving “airplane smell” a whole new meaning. The upcoming flight—which will take off from Los Angeles and land in San Francisco—is likely the first of many for the airline company as they look to reduce both greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs by expanding into biofuels. United also plans to announce a $30 million stake Fulcrum BioEnergy—a biofuel company that claims it’s able to cut down carbon emissions by up to 80%. No fear; the flight won’t actually smell any different.
