Twitter: Stronger or Weaker?

While there may be an intense Wall Street-applied weight impacting the future of Twitter, a quick glance at the service during any milestone event (which can be read as “Presidential debate”) or all that falls between (such as every other television program or cultural touch-points) reveals something very different. According to an essay in the New Yorker by James Surowiecki, “Though it’s grown revenue to more than two billion dollars, has three hundred million active users and hundreds of millions of visitors, and is now a crucial medium for cultural and political discourse, Twitter has regularly disappointed investors.” Surowiecki makes clear that “not every company needs to be—or should be—huge” and that ascertaining appropriate goals for investors (beyond growth) might align the reality of the company’s success versus the “perpetual disappointment” it continues to be to investors.
