Origins of Safety Pin Solidarity
While it may appear to be taken out of the pages of the Hunger Games (though less inspired than a shiny bird) and there are already reports that it’s been co-opted by white supremacists, many have taken to donning a safety pin as a silent show of solidarity with anyone feeling threatened by rhetoric and violence surrounding the recent election. It all began with an American woman named Allison living in London just after the Brexit vote. Seeking a simple solution to announce her willingness to help anybody in need, she adorned herself with a safety pin. It caught on by way of social media. Now, it’s a quiet way of announcing alliance with those marginalized through the election—and making clear you’re there to help.
