Revisiting the American Dream

When evaluating the state of the American dream, especially in light of consistently troubling news from all reaches of the country, there’s quite possibly no better way to gain an understanding than taking to the road. This is exactly what first-time filmmaker James Marshall (who also happens to own West Village restaurant White Hall) undertook. On a quest to evaluate the current state of American’s belief in the future, Marshall learned to ride a motorcycle and trekked across eight American cities with photographer Todd Williams. With the help of Cole Haan, in the brand’s first role as film producers, Marshall directed the mini docu-series now on Hulu dubbed “The American Dream Project,” in which he captures people with hope and love at their core. Marshall further explains his personal inspiration and vision in the return-to-print edition of BlackBook magazine, out now.
