Vienna Design Week 2008: Carpetplots
(08 October 2008) - Reinterpreting the carpet as canvas, Carpetplots is a series of six limited editions each by a different Austrian designer. The project is the work of Vienna-based design duo Danklhampel, who curated the group of designers, and the furniture retailer Prodomo, which hosted the show at their gallery space, Prodomo Windows. What's unique about these carpets (compared to other similar collaborations) is a process, that's...

Ísbjörn / Ice Bear Rug
(26 June 2008) - This imitation polar bear-skin rug is designed by Reykjavik-based designer Sruli Recht for Birkiland. Limited to a single run of 10, the Ice Bear is not just the cute-and-cuddly accessory it appears. The designer hopes to pack a dose of symbolism into the classic man-over-beast accessory. Cobbled together from 15 different Icelandic sheepskins, it's meant to resemble the classic butcher's diagram poster that labels...

Pebble Carpet and Long Life Light
(03 March 2008) - Generally, I resent being tricked by household objects masquerading as something they're not. That said, I'm hard pressed to get mad at this unassuming pile of stones. What appears to be solid rock is actually a cushioned wool rug. Each "stone" of the Pebble Carpet is hand-crafted of merino wool and attached with an internal cord. Designed by Ronel Jordaan in Johannesberg, South Africa,...

Drop Dead Rug
(16 October 2006) - Inspired by old crime TV, the Drop Dead Rug prototype by British designer Alex Carpenter was such a hit at the London Design Festival in 2005 that Alex will take it into production soon. Mimicking the shape "of an unfortunate soul which may have come to pass right there on your living room floor with their silhouette remaining as evidence," the throw will be...

Isolyn
(15 June 2006) - Isolyn for their texture-heavy rugs that blend in felted cocoons and bubbles with sustainable materials like leather, sheepskin, and wool. The protruding forms also make for unexpected foot and body massages, and since head designer Michelle Butler once competed in synchronized ice-skating, we'll trust that she knows all about foot relief. The British company was featured at the recent ICFF show in New York...

(07 July 2005) - Fans of Vivienne Westwood's fashions can now bring her punk sensibilities home with a series of new carpet designs for The Rug Company.
