Analog and Digital Collide in a Burst of Text and LEDs at the ITP Spring 2009 Show
(11 May 2009) - Twice each year students from NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) exhibit their final projects. Ranging between artistic and commercial, conceptual and pragmatic, the work is always inspirational. With every show there seems to be an emergent theme—this year's collision of analog and digital isn't unprecedented, but does deliver new interpretations to get excited about. AL-gorithm, by Alex Kauffmann Alex Kauffmann, the artist behind AL-gorithm,...

Highlights from the Spring 2008 ITP Show
(14 May 2008) - Our pilgrimage to the ITP show yesterday yielded more than a few great finds. From musical interpretations of an individual "color profile" and automated paintbrush robots to oversize models of a scrotum and a digital version of Exquisite Corpse, the projects (as usual) ran the gamut from the sublime to the absurd. Colorful Melody Colorful Melody analyzes a person's color profile based on their skin...

ITP Spring Show 2008
(06 May 2008) - Spring in NYC means trees in full bloom, lightened moods and NYU's semi-annual mega-exhibit of art and technology, the ITP show taking place this year 12-13 May 2008. While every season promises an outpouring of creativity, this time around I was particularly intrigued by a project more straightforward than most but with a subject after my own (and Josh's) heart called "Born Dropped Out,...

(18 May 2006) -
(18 May 2006) -
Last week’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) 2006 Spring Show was the overwhelming hive of creativity we’ve come to expect from the school. A chance for the student artists of ITP to introduce their ideas and projects to the public, the exhibition showcases a range of futuristic concepts to a capacity crowd. In this episode—the second time Cool Hunting Video has covered the event—we take a close look at a virtual pop-up book, a drawing machine, sculpture inspired by sunlight, and an orchestra made of zippers.
ITP Spring Show 2006
(15 May 2006) - Each ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program) expo seems bigger, crazier, and more well-produced than the next. Last week's show was no exception with projects like the De-Painter, a machine that uses viewers' movements to generate paintings, and a Bluetooth person-tracking system called BlueWay. The digital readout pictured above left is Robert Seward's trippy Consciousness Field Resonator that takes the concept behind Princeton's Global Consciousness Project...

Nokia N92
(03 November 2005) - In 1999 I wrote a graduate thesis (NYU, ITP) on form defining function in mobile devices. My collaborator Kent Hollrah and I even went so far as to mock-up a prototype we called The Stack. It was made of multiple display panels that were hinged in a manner that allowed it to be folded into four different shapes; each used for a different purpose—phone,...
