Rapha x Timothy Everest Bespoke Suit
(27 February 2009) - Rapha Performance Roadwear's new collaboration with tailor Timothy Everest, one of the leading practitioners of the New Bespoke Movement, isn't doing anything to help stop the brand lust I already have for the cyclewear company. I was recently invited by Slate Olsen, Rapha's General Manager for USA operations, to check it out at Signature Cycles' Manhattan showroom near West End Avenue, a trek I made...

Alien Bikes
(21 August 2008) - There's two different camps in cycling. The first seeks out every new, high-tech toy they can attach to their carbon fiber frame, while the other takes the opposite approach, stripping off anything that's not vital to its performance. These fixed-gear purists shun derailleurs, brakes and anything else that obscures the clean geometry of the bicycle frame. The latter group is the target audience of...

Five Better Bike Racks
(19 March 2008) - The bike rack is one of those urban features woefully in need of a redesign. Thanks to NYC DOT and Cooper-Hewitt, who joined forces in creating the City Racks Design Competition, New York just might continue to lead the way in making cities more bike-friendly. As many people have noticed, the city has been making great advances on behalf of the cyclist, adding miles...

Timbuk2 Covert Messenger Bag
(15 February 2008) - With the new Covert model, Timbuk2 expands on their classic three-panel messenger design with a few interesting twists. Namely, the fabric appears normal in daylight but it's specially engineered to be amazingly reflective in the dark, making wearers perfectly visible and, curiously, not very covert. (Click image to see the fabric in detail.)With a modified design, the San Francisco-based company appeals to bike messengers,...

Laughing Bike
(08 December 2005) - Another highlight from the Basel weekend (yes, updates are still coming) was Soundbike, an art project by Jessica Thompson. Basically, a fleet of bikes was outfitted to emit laughter when the rider pedals. The faster the pedaling, the louder and more hysterical the laughter. In addition to being a lot of fun, I though her piece was a perfect little statement on the art...

The Bicycle Film Festival
(03 October 2005) - New environmentalism (the kind that feels as good as it looks) shares a lot with the urban bike culture movement. A major catalyst in bringing different riders together over the last several years has been The Bicycle Film Festival. Guided by what is perhaps the most offbeat curatorial premise of the many festivals out there, the 5th Annual event opens in San Francisco this...

Toilet Tricycle Race
(14 September 2005) - Just because the moment has passed, does not mean it isn't worth mentioning. For example, The Toilet Tricycle Race kicked off the annual Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe on September 2nd. The event was created and organized by artists Steven and Billy Blaise Dufala. They hoped to provide opportunities for a collaborative creative environment and community involvement. The race took place in...

Bamboo Bike

Shift Bicycle
(19 April 2005) - Shift Bicycle was designed by Scott Shim, Ryan Lightbody and Matt Grossman, and it won them top honors in a bicycle design competition held by the Taiwanese Government. iXi Bike
(04 April 2005) - iXi Bike seems like the most convenient, and highly designed collapsible bike on the market. It collapses with a patented interlocking system that seems extremely simple to use. Starting at a little over a grand, it's a bit pricey-- but that's what quality craftsmanship costs these days. It boats an aluminum frame, foldable pedals, and a slew of other adjustable and interchangeable features. Update:...

First Glimpse: The Puma Bike
(02 March 2005) - Puma, Vexed and Biomega teamed up to create this highly functional, yet totally minimal bike. I had the chance to try it out last week and was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting the looks would exceed the comfort and function. As it turns out, they're evenly matched. This team has managed to create an urban apartment friendly, folding bike that rides like it has...

The Windcheetah
(17 February 2005) - This is the Windcheetah, the world's most advanced recumbent tricycle ever. It still remains the only trike to have set six significant speed and endurance records as well as having the honor of being exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim museum. This Hypersport model starts at $5350, other models start at $3588 respectively-- but they don't have the extensive bad...

(16 February 2005) - NY photographer Cheryl Dunn is having an opening for a book based on her short film "Bicycle Gangs of New York." The film is a fun high energy piece with an original score, and the cast is a mix of real and fictional bicycle gangs - see if you can pick out who's who. A Cyclist's View
(27 August 2004) - Ever see a bicycle messenger hurling down a Manhattan street, dodging pedestrians and threading the needle between a bus and a stupid stretch Hummer? If you think it looks crazy from the safety of your cab, just imagine what it's like from the messenger's perspective. Lucas Brunelle mounted a camera to his helmet and made an incredible little video that gives you just that....
