1000º C: Deyrolle
(23 October 2009) - by Zeva Bellel In the wee morning hours of 1 February 2008, a four-alarm fire ravaged Deyrolle, Paris' most beloved taxidermy shop. Photographer Laurent Bochet's forthcoming book 1000º C: Deyrolle documents the aftermath with hauntingly beautiful images of the shop. “The scene had a Pompeii feeling to it, almost like an archeological dig,” recalls Bochet of the charred and ransacked insides of the nearly two-hundred-year-old...

Julia DeVille: Cineraria
(04 August 2009) - Taxidermist, jewelry designer and artist Julia DeVille creates the type of wearable art rarely seen from other labels. Focused on working as a full-time artist, her exhibition "Cineraria" currently on display at Sophie Gannon Gallery in Richmond, Melbourne, is how deVille sees herself in the future. “I’ll still create my jewelry, but I aim to have two assistants producing this for me, while I...

DARR: Walrus Doctor's Bag
(15 March 2007) - In a neighborhood jammed with antique stores DARR stands out for its unusual inventory on Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue. Among eclectic furniture, busts and many offbeat cabinet-of-curiousity-like items (turtle shells, whale bones, etc.), we found this doctor's bag (click on images for detail). Made of walrus skin, the bag is fairly large, durable, and perfectly worn—very au courant for the enduring neo-19th century look of...

Jeanie M.
(10 November 2005) - Jeanie M. is an artist and taxidermist from San Francisco. After several years photographing roadkill a friend (?) passed along a dead mouse that their snake passed on. She took this as a sign and started making whimsical scenes with small animals (mostly mice). She also teaches taxidermy at Paxton Gate, an eclectic and inspired store in San Francisco....

Making Time
(12 August 2005) - Featured earlier this week for its ReadyMade Store has a few other items that piqued our interest. One is their Clock Kit, which allows you to make your own unique timepiece from just about anything. Basically a box of parts, the kit includes everything you'll need except the clock face, which you provide. Put in a couple of hours of rummaging and a little...

Afke Golsteijn
(21 July 2005) - Dutch artist Afke Golsteijn isn't the first to work with dead animals as her medium, but none quite achieve the same sweetly creepy aesthetic that comes from her joining of taxidermy and finely wrought details. Equal parts Edgar Allan Poe, Grimm's Fairytales (she calls them "Contemporary Fairytales"), and a more feminine David Altmejd, Golsteijn's work at times reads like a literalized metaphor, such as...
