Photographer Michael Cogliantry: Furverts
(03 July 2009) - by Russ Lowe We recently sat down over a tall boy with photographer Michael Cogliantry to chat about his latest book project "Furverts," chopping wood and his first case of hate mail. The Brooklynite-turned-Portlander, whose work spans hi-fi advertorial shoots for top brands to portraits of Alaskan gold-miners, made the cross-country trek west via caravan last summer. The first Pacific Northwest winter is a...

Horse Play
(24 August 2006) - Cloth-bound, gilt-edged and printed on matte paper, the new book called Horse Play tells the story of Streethorsing—the sport of riding horses in cities—with the highest of production values. Whether or not the obscure subculture actually exists, the tome is filled with unbelievable photos of horses doing skateboard-like tricks off railings and over barriers (challenging pro photoshop-spotters) and interspersed with snaps of minor celebs...

Nikki S. Lee
(18 March 2005) - While reading the premier issue of the hot new Theme Magazine, I was reminded of the work from Korean photographer Nikki S. Lee. On the surface her work may seem like simple snapshots of various subcultures. In reality, each piece is comprised of extensive research and cultural assimilation. Prior to creating the photograph, in which she is always one of the subjects, Lee becomes...

Francine Spiegel: Congratulations!
(04 March 2005) - Francine Spiegel is an LA-based artist who's works include photocollage, video, mixed media assemblages and freeform installations. All of her work is derived from samplings of funky feminine cyber-subcultures, techno debris from her studio floor and other random raw materials. Spiegel’s loose, sprawling technique captures the Dionysian abandon of the fantasies on display, which are woven into shiny, brash webs with fetishistic textures. The...

Sneakers, Size Isn't Everything
(02 March 2005) - Sneakers, Size Isn't Everything is a 1998 homage to the design, production and culture of Sneakers. It's a beautifully designed, highly visual book that covers brands big and small, and scans from Japanese school girls to LA gangs to Skater kids. It's a great glimpse at how much and yet how little has changed in the last 7 years. ...

Cool Japan: Otaku Strikes!
(15 February 2005) - This past weekend, the Japan Society in New York City launched a series of events entitled Cool Japan: Otaku Strikes!, which run through the Spring. In the U.S., an Otaku is someone who is considered to be somewhat of a die-hard fan of manga or anime. However in Japan, an Otaku can also be related to music, cooking, video games-- you get the picture....

Wear It With Pride
(10 January 2004) - Though their most recent heyday was in the 80's, pin badges (or buttons, or pins) have always had their place in certain street fashion sub cultures. They are making a come back, and now there's a one stop shop for the neatest selection around. WEARITWITHPRIDE is a new website showcasing a unique collection of pin badges designed by some of the best Graphic Designers,...
