Photographer Alejandra Laviada
(01 December 2008) - Mexico City most often conjures visuals involving a profusion of bright colors and bustling energy, possibly even tacky souvenirs or dice hanging from rear view mirrors. While her hometown's influence is mildly apparent in her work, Alejandra Laviada's photosculpture series of abandoned industrial objects stacked and set against the slate backdrop of Mexico City's abandoned factories is a sharp contrast to any preconception we may...

Lumisty
(03 February 2006) - Borrowed a stapler? Typing a personal email? Filing your nails from inside your office? Of course, you don't want gawkers watching your every move. As office space becomes tighter, we're crammed in closer quarters without an ounce of privacy. But Lumisty gives us some respite from the panopticon gaze of our fellow workers. The folks at Glass Film Enterprises have developed a glass pane...

Melt Modern
(02 February 2006) - Matt Proctor and Aixé Djelal are Portland based cast aluminum artisans who create a range of one-of-a-kind decoratives and architectural elements. Aixé describes their work as "molten lava frozen in space," and that's pretty accurate. Their work exhibits an unusual blend of organic shapes, voluptuous lines and surface texture, and is made entirely of recycled aluminum. Melt Modern products and information about custom work...

NatureMill Automatic Kitchen Compost Machine
(18 January 2006) - The NatureMill automatic compost machine is designed to sit unobtrusively in your kitchen. Its aesthetic may be neutral, but it's a small price to pay for the huge benefits it provides—an estimated landfill savings of more than two tons during its lifetime in a home with a family of four. Plus it generates a large volume of compost automatically—no cultures, worms, fuss or muss—just...

Flexicomb by PadLAb
(27 July 2005) - As one might deduce from its name, Flexicomb is a new flexible, honeycomb-shaped material with a million possible uses. The design, conceptualized by PadLAb's Dan Gottleib while in architecture school, consists of thousands of synthetic polypropylene tubes melded into one of nature's most familiar and amazing forms. On its own, the design is a stunning visual and tactile landscape that becomes even more mesmerizing...

Core77 Reports on CES
(24 January 2005) - Core77, the Industrial Design Supersite, was also present at the global electronics spectacle we know and love as CES. Sure, it was a few weeks ago, but there was just so much to see that you can't possibly be done trying to get the details. Offering a designer's eye view, the Core77 CES Review is now live. ...
