Milan Design Week 2009 Recap: Makkum
(29 April 2009) - Every year during the Salone del Mobile, the Netherlands' oldest company, Royal Tichelaar Makkum, mounts a quiet exhibition of its latest projects in a humble, sun-drenched space off of Via dell'Orso in the city center. The space is noteworthy because it speaks to Makkum's intent with these unusual projects. Guided by tradition and fueled with an intellectual regard for the ceramic crafts, Makkum's exhibitions are...

Double Dutch at London Design Festival
(26 September 2008) - The Double Dutch show was surely the most sensual and evocative display of design talent seen at the London Design Festival last week. A small unused gallery in the Brompton Design District was overtaken by a banquet of flora and fauna, the stunning beauty of which stopped passers by in their tracks. This surprising and seductive guerilla exhibition was curated by Jane Withers and...

Urban Cactus
(23 August 2007) - On the harbour in Vuurplaat, Rotterdam, a proposed Urban Cactus rises from the usually boxy Dutch architectural landscape. Responding to the natural setting of being on the harbour, UCX Architects envisage a housing project that is green with stacked undulating floor plates, giving large outdoor terraces to each apartment and allowing for light penetration. Details of eco-attributes have yet to be released but a cactus...

Tattoo Darling
(10 May 2007) - From the land of tulips, Edam cheese and clogs comes Angelique Houtkamp—tattoo artist, painter, collector and shoe designer. Making her imprint on the global art stage, Houtkamp's images reflect the graphic romance of old–school tattoos, the heyday of the Wild West and the mystery of Spain. From Sultry pin–ups, broken hearts, swallows and sailing ships, to black panthers, mermaids, spunky cowgirls, horseshoes and cacti,...

The Burning House
(27 February 2007) - I was recently in L.A. for the weekend and was lucky enough to catch “The Burning House,” a collaborative installation by Faile, Swoon and David Ellis at New Image Art now extended through 17 March 2007. Walking into the gallery is overwhelming. Much like Wooster on Spring, Every inch of wall, window, or door has been wheat pasted or painted over. (Click above image...

Filliers Fruit Jenevers
(30 May 2006) - Nothing says summer's arrived like a cold jenever on ice. Jenever is a liquor made from juniper berries (and often grain) that comes in many varieties. Only those made in Holland or the northern part of Belgium are able to use the name jenever. Marisa, editor of CH sister site Needled stopped by CH HQ with a few bottles that she brought with her...
