Photographer and Fisherman Corey Arnold
(14 November 2008) - Corey Arnold's world straddles two disparate, yet wonderfully integrated, pursuits—he works as both a professional photographer and an Alaskan crab fisherman. Now there's a story. We asked him how his inside perspective on human and animal relationships influences his photographs. When I was a kid, I used to stalk birds and other animals with my BB gun in the backyard. My hunter instinct was strong...

FishPhone Text Messaging Service
(15 October 2008) - Without FishPhone, an SMS-based application that keeps up-to-date statistics on the nebulous field of ocean friendly seafood, eating fish can be like walking a minefield these days. You shouldn't get the Yellowfin Tuna or risk eating mercury. The Atlantic Cod doesn't have an unhealthy chemicals, but decades of overfishing have left populations at a historic low and bottom trawling causes even more environmental degradation....

Lucas Isawa: Koinobori
(31 July 2008) - By combining traditional Japanese Carp-shaped wind socks with paper lanterns, artist Lucas Isawa has turned his floating and illuminated school of fish into a breathtakingly peaceful spectacle. Building on koinobori (wind socks decorated with colorful Carp and flown in Japan on Children's Day), Isawa uses bamboo to first construct the skeleton shell of his highly-detailed fish and then fills in the gaps with silk...

Infinity Aquarium
(07 May 2008) - Part of their Forever! series, BCXSY designed this polygonal aquarium so that fish endlessly swim around the geometrical shape. Similar to modern-day insane asylums, which are designed with connected lap-like hallways instead of dead end hallways, the fish can swim around in circles 'till their heart's content. It's hand-crafted from hand-cut glass and you can find more info and a video at BCSXY via...

Fish Reflexology Spa
(15 February 2008) - There are a few places in the world, mostly in Asia, that use Doctor Fish to help treat dermatological disorders like Psoriasis. The fish eat affected and dead areas of the skin leaving the healthy parts alone. More recently a few spas started touting this service as a means to clean dead skin from your body. Andrew Bunney of Gimme 5 recently visited the...

Vintage Tools
(05 November 2007) - A well-made tool can last a lifetime, and it's often true that they just don't make them like they used to these days. The cleverly named Mantiques carries quality antique tools from well-known brands like Stanley, Bailey and Millers Falls. Levelers (left), bone handle knives (right), vintage flashlights, old-school binoculars (center) and even some fishing tackle are available for purchase. As functional designer objects...

Catch
(12 April 2005) - Catch--a seafood restaurant on Market--and I was extremely pleased. Fun and casual atmosphere, a tasty menu, and a wonderful staff. Eating there was an absolute treat--great fish, oysters, and more. If you're there on a nice day, try to grab a table outside on the street--I had a lot of fun people watching, and it was a good afternoon sunny lunch spot. ...
