Color Changing Pavement
(10 April 2008) - Simple, effective and possibly life-saving idea, France's Eurovia is developing a thermosensitive road varnish that changes color to indicate freezing and dangerous conditions. Like a Hypercolor t-shirt, the road could turn pink (or any other indicative color) when surface temperature is below freezing and returning to neutral once it warms back up. Not only a boon to motorists, but it helps out the environment...

Nordaq Fresh Water Filtration System
(09 April 2008) - Nordaq Fresh is a new Swedish water filtration system that may change the way restaurants think about drinking water. We hit Napa this weekend and one of the many pleasures was an afternoon at The French Laundry (thanks for the hook up, José). When our waiter explained our water options—locally filtered flat or sparking, on the house) we were pleasantly surprised. He went on...

Fentix Cube
(29 February 2008) - Combining the brain-teasing appeal of a Rubik's cube with a multi-touch interface, British electronic engineer Andrew Fentem's Fentix Cube might be the ultimate geek toy. The full-color screens are bright enough to see in daylight and the lights can be programmed to simulate any number of multi-dimensional puzzles, including Rubik's classic (watch the video to see it in action), games or ambient lighting themes. No...

Absolut Machines: Absolut Quartet
(28 February 2008) - Absolut Machines is Absolut's promotional initiative that explores where technology meets design in the form of two "machines." Last night we got to check out one, the Absolut Quartet, an interactive multi-instrumental robotic machine. It consists of a marimba played by rubber balls precisely shot from a robotic cannon, a series of spinning wineglasses dampened by robotic fingers and an array of percussive instruments....

mStation Orb
(18 January 2008) - I swear I'm not that big of a nerd, but anything that kind of reminds me of Star Wars is just totally awesome, especially when it happens to look like the Death Star. The Orb from mStation is just that, a sleek and stylish "Made for iPod" desktop docking station/speaker system that, just like the name suggest, is an orb that packs a powerful...

Wallpaper Design Awards 2008
(11 January 2008) - Wallpaper unveiled its “Design Awards” series recently with some interesting results. Though we're not sure about their cred since they proclaimed Los Angeles “Best City” (air quality and gun violence were obviously not strong criterias), otherwise the periodical (along with judges that include Tadao Ando, Wong Kar-wai and Donatella Versace) really pulled it off. Best domestic appliance goes to the "Katamari 01" speaker by...

V-Moda Vibe Duo
(08 January 2008) - Not everyone has welcoming outer ears to the standard iPhone earbuds. While we haven't found the perfect replacement, the V-Moda VIBE Duos deliver the best combination of functionality, sound and in-the-ear fit. The VIBE Duos feature the inline mic and button to switch between music and incoming phone calls similar to the Apple iPhone stereo headset. This is a must for smoothly handling unexpected...

Motorola ROKR E8
(07 January 2008) - The lastest in Motorola's line of music phones, the ROKR E8, has a new feature that (believe it or not) rivals the iPhone. The innovation is a little piece of tech called "localized haptic feedback," which makes pushing a button on the touch screen feel like actually pressing a button. This is achieved by a small vibration under the spot where you touch, and...

Crucifix MP3 player
(17 December 2007) - Perhaps taking a cue from the iBelieve (a lanyard that made the original iPod shuffles look like crosses), Chinese electronics wholesaler Chinavision recently came out with a crucifix-shaped MP3 player for devout music listeners. It's a rather unique way of marketing technology and we can't help but wonder what the J Man would think of such a device. The player offers 1GB of internal...

Art in Motion
(29 November 2007) - Our friends over at Hewlett-Packard are presenting the Art in Motion event in Sydney at The Forum on 6 December 2007. Art in Motion is a "free multi-sensory event" showcasing performances from Coldcut, Nu-Mark, and awesome Berlin-based collective, Pfadfinderei—featuring eight designers, VJs, artists and typographers—as well as local acts Apsci and DJ Samrai. It's all part of an initiative by Hewlett-Packard to "provide a...

CG Tattoo Preview
(14 November 2007) - Ever want to see what a tattoo would look like on your body before permanently inking yourself? Computer graphics artist Loïc Zimmerman developed a program that does just that. By scanning your body you can capture exact body proportions to accurately depict a complex 2-D design on a body's 3-D canvas. What it looks like after years of aging and wrinkling is another story....

MB&F Horological Machine No.2
(14 November 2007) - Maximilian Büsser, the mastermind behind the rule-breaking HM1, recently offered me the rare privilege to have first look in person at his new child, the Horological Machine No.2, before it went public. Since going public, it's been far and wide in the blogosphere, but I think it's too amazing to not put on CH. With four dials—Jumping Hours, Concentric Retrograde Minutes, Retrograde Date and...

Cool Hunting Video Presents: Bruce Shapiro
(02 November 2007) - Northern California-based artist Bruce Shapiro makes the kind of kinetic sculpture that mesmerizes and dazzles visitors at science museums using computers and simple motors, a practice he terms "The Art of Motion Control." In episode 94 we visit Bruce at the Maker Fair and at his home to learn more about works like "Pipedream," effectively a screen that uses bubbles in place of pixels,...

Pacemaker
(17 October 2007) - When one of CH's designers tipped us to the Pacemaker, the world's first hand-held DJ system, (right after we also heard about it when in Europe recently), we knew it was worth checking out. Fortunately for us, we had the chance to experience it first hand when co-founder Ola Sars stopped by our offices earlier this week. In person, the "PSP of music's" look,...

Piezoelectric Concept Backpack
(08 October 2007) - Capitalizing on the friction and heat created by walking, running and even just wearing jeans, engineers from Michigan Technological University, Arizona State University and NanoSonic Inc. devised a way to use this type of generated energy in a concept backpack that can charge portable electronic devices, like iPods and mobile phones. Shoulder straps made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), a strong, flexible material that feels...

Wired NextFest 2007
(17 September 2007) - From ideas that ran from the creepy (like regenerated body parts including bladders) to conceptually fascinating (like a harp with strings made from lasers and a Lifestraw that kills sinister infectious organisms in water upon contact), over 160 exhibitors at the 4th annual Wired NextFest in Los Angeles this past weekend enthusiastically revealed their visions of the future to receptive nerds of all ages....

CD-R with Braille
(04 September 2007) - CDs and DVDs not only look alike, but also feel alike. Imagine not being able to see the words "CD" or "DVD" printed on the disc. How would you know what it was? You wouldn't! To help blind consumers, Japan's Mitsubishi Kagaku Media has released CD-R with braille on the disc's surface. Each CD holds 700MB of data, and they are packaged 10 discs...

Ovi: Music, GPS and Games
(29 August 2007) - By now, you've most likely heard all the Nokia buzz today—great new phones, the N95 is finally coming stateside and the gaming industry continues to go more mobile. We love the expanded 8G memory in the N81 and N95 which allows us to hold more music, photos, games etc. This brings me to what, in my opinion, is subtly some of the biggest news...
