Brendan Monroe
(27 January 2005) - Brendan Monroe graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with honors. Check out his work and it's not hard to see why. I give him my stamp of approval for a ridiculously incredible body of work. From illustration to sculpture it's clear he has let nothing stand in the way of his imagination. Everything I can find on his site, I really...

Shigeo Fukuda
(30 November 2004) - The new book, Masters of Deception, features the work of several illusionists, including the sculptor Shigeo Fukuda. Fukuda's mastery is in creating physical forms that take on a second identity when the viewing angle changes or a light is introduced. In the Lunch with a Helmet On (above), the shadow of a motorcycle is built entirely out of welded forks, knives and spoons. Movies...

Stephen Hendee
(07 September 2004) - Stephen Hendee makes sculpture and installations from polypropylene, glue, black tape, fluorescent lights and colored gels. His environments are like otherworldly landscapes conjured up during a science fiction character's REM sleep. Crazy as that may sound, they are simultaneously serene. Get a copy of Ascension, the catalog of Stephen's 40 foot tall sculpture that viewers have walked in, up and through-- emerging totally in...

Tongari-kun ( Mr. Pointy )
(12 August 2004) - I wish I could say "I'm so over Takashi Murakami!" Commercialization makes the world go round, but hasn't he taken it too far? Maybe. Maybe-not. The fact of the matter is that I continue to be delighted by the things he does. Tongari-kun ( Mr. Pointy ) is a 28 foot sculpture installed at Rockefeller Center Plaza thru October 2004. The ability for his...

Erwin Hauer
(28 July 2004) - In the 1950s Erwin Hauer designed and built architectural screens that perfectly complimented the furniture, interiors and structures of that era. He created simple patterns out of complex sculpture that simultaneously sooth and challenge the eye. Continuity and potential infinity have been at the very center of my sculpture from early on. I derived the notion of a continuous surface primarily from my studies...

Millenium Park, Chicago, IL
(11 June 2004) - Next month is the grand opening of Chicago's Millennium Park. The centerpiece is the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the most sophisticated outdoor concert venue of its kind in the United States. The last few Gehry buildings seem to have been cut and past replications of each-other, but this one is a little different. It's still distinctively Gehry, but where the other buildings...

Spiral Jetty
(15 January 2004) - There was a great story in the NY Times earlier this week on Robert Smithson's 34 year old sculpture at the bottom of the Great Salt Lake. Spiral Jetty has eroded over time from exposure to the elements. The Dia Art Foundation is proposing to restore the piece. But debate has risen about whether earth art should be restored or simply allowed to change...
