Stanley Vacuum Bottle: Pastel Color for Spring
(13 April 2005) - Vacuum Bottle. In fact, the company had women in mind when they revamped its classic half-quart stainless steel canister. Stanley released a new version, updating the almost-century-old thermos by streamlining the vacuum seal, widening the opening for easy drinking and adding ice cubes and introducing three new colors to join the classic green all pastels: pink, light blue and violet. Now soccer moms...

Volcano Stadium
(13 April 2005) - Studio Massaud, clearly have a wonderful imagination. These are computer generated images of a new soccer stadium set to look like a mexican volcano--they won a competition to design this new stadium. Advertisements will be projected on the "cloud" above, which will be made of stretched fabric to protect spectators from the elements. The rest of the stadium will be set inside the volcano...

Jill Bliss: Native Flowers Journal
(07 March 2005) - Jill Bliss, founder of blissen, has created the Native Flowers Journal. It's a small blank journal with mostly gridded pages. As you flip through it, drawings of the local flora of the San Francisco Bay Area border the edges of the page spreads. Occasionally the neurotic grid work will disappear leaving only the flowers and the date to define the space. ...

First Glimpse: The Puma Bike
(02 March 2005) - Puma, Vexed and Biomega teamed up to create this highly functional, yet totally minimal bike. I had the chance to try it out last week and was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting the looks would exceed the comfort and function. As it turns out, they're evenly matched. This team has managed to create an urban apartment friendly, folding bike that rides like it has...

Titanium + Silicone
(01 March 2005) - You're looking at the small cushions on a new series of outdoor furniture by Heltzer. Each cushion is an air pocket topped with a layer of silicone. While you might expect it to feel like Pam Anderson's bosom, sitting on this stuff is actually quite comfortable. The air pressure is adjustable which effects the contour of the seating surface and each silicone unit molds...

The Gates
(12 February 2005) - 7500 steel gates with nylon flags, 16 feet tall, 23 miles long, 26 years in the making, $20 million, on view for 16 days. My first glimpse of The Gates, Jeanne-Claude and Christo's Central Park installation that opened today in New York was from the top of an apartment building on the South-East side of the park. The orange flags looked like dominoes lining...

Puma + Vexed = Urban Mobility
(09 February 2005) - Puma and Vexed Generation will be releasing the second season of their collaboration, Urban Mobility. The line is designed to target the needs of the urban rider by delivering adaptable performance-wear that fuses cutting edge styling with highly technical designs. Yeah, it does that very well-- having the opportunity to sport a couple samples around town, I have to say the pieces move great...

Saffron is the Ingredient of The Gates
(04 February 2005) - Here in New York (and probably beyond) we're eagerly awaiting the unveiling of Jeanne-Claude and Christo's Central Park installation, The Gates. To honor the work and compliment its color, several local restaurants will be serving dishes with Saffron. On the list is: Bolo (23 E. 22nd St., 212/228-2200, www.bolorestaurant.com), Django (480 Lexington Ave., 212/871-6171), Josephs (1240 Avenue of the Americas, 212/332-1515, www.citarella.com), La Prima...

Strandbeest
(27 January 2005) - This is gonna make you freak! Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist who about 10 years ago starting using plastic tubes to create these huge skeleton animal like structures that are powered by the wind. He puts these creatures on the beach where they wait to gather enough wind power to move all on their own. He hopes to be able to someday put...

Burton Series 13
(10 December 2004) - All the kids love customizing their stuff, right? Ok, fine-- us grown-ups do to. Anyway, this season Burton is running a customized board program called Series 13. You can choose from 4 different boards and configure the colors for a dozen different deck patterns and several different base patterns. All Series 13 boards are individually built by hand at the Burton Manufacturing Center in...

Burton / R.E.D. Audio HiFi Helmet
(25 November 2004) - This isn't the first snowboarding helmet with built in speakers, but it may be the best so far. Burton claims audio excellence and I haven't gotten proof of that yet, but the overall features are just right. Removable speakers, adjustable volume, a quick release chord and an easy access mute button give this lid the functionality needed for happiness and safety. Have you tried...

686 Toolbelt
(15 November 2004) - Good design is all about elegant problem solving. In this case, you often need to make an adjustment to your bindings while snowboarding, but carrying a set of tools around isn't always convenient. The Toolbelt from 686 Clothing Company solves this problem (and the baggy pants issue) by building 2 screwdrivers, 3 wrenches and a bottle opener in to a belt buckle. Very nice....

Tumi Mountain Pack
(29 October 2004) - Tumi continues to push outward and upward-- this time with a mountain climbing pack that looks just as good in the Sea of Tranquility as it does on the top of Mt. Hood. Their VP of Design, Timm Fenton, is an avid mountain climber and created this pack specifically for a climb in South America this Winter. The ultralight pack has a 5000 cubic...

JB + Ride
(08 September 2004) - It will be a few more months before hitting the first freshies of the season, but it's not too early to start dreaming. One dream came true already-- the hotness of JB Designs applied to a snowboard boot. JB teamed up with Ride Snowboards to create this custom set-up which features a laser etched design and custom graphic prints. They'll definitely be hard to...

Camo Tote
(18 August 2004) - Was LL Bean trying to be trendy when they introduced this rockin camouflage tote? I kind of doubt it. Who cares, anyway? It's a great looking and water resistant bag for get-away-from-the-city weekends or for all your hunting dog's acessories. ...

Icebreaker
(24 June 2004) - It's Summertime here in NYC so it's a little hard to think about cold weather fashion. But down in New Zealand they're coming upon Winter. Fortunately for them, there's Icebreaker, an NZ based company that designs and manufacturers high tech and stylish Merino wool sport clothing. Their lines include under layers, mid layers and outer wear-- all warm, good looking and easy to care...

Spiral Jetty
(15 January 2004) - There was a great story in the NY Times earlier this week on Robert Smithson's 34 year old sculpture at the bottom of the Great Salt Lake. Spiral Jetty has eroded over time from exposure to the elements. The Dia Art Foundation is proposing to restore the piece. But debate has risen about whether earth art should be restored or simply allowed to change...

Digital Sundial
(06 December 2003) - Like a digital clock, the digital sundial displays the current time using digits. In the true tradition of all sundials, the device is purely passive - it operates without electricity, and has no moving parts. Instead, the sunlight is cast through two cleverly designed masks in the shape of numbers that show the current time of day. The sundial is available in two versions,...

Are You Receiving Me?
(25 February 2003) - Artist Jody Zellen explores the collision of public and private space facilitated by mobile telephony in her latest work, Disembodied Voices. Cell phones allow us to converse with each other anywhere, and the separate halves of our intimate conversations can become bizarre performances for audiences of innocent bystanders. Zellen describes the web site as 'a meditation on the nature of public space'; here you can...
