Gore
(22 June 2006) - Gore, the kaleidoscopic photo collage that's equal parts documentary project and art book by New York noise band Black Dice and their collaborator, photographer Jason Frank Rothenberg, gets a launch tomorrow 23 June 2006 at New York's New Museum. Featuring Rothenberg's dreamy anonymous landscapes and snapshot-like portraits interspersed with (and integrated into) cutouts of porn, candy wrappers, '70s-era advertisements, and other ephemera, the book...
Dani Siciliano: Slappers
(22 June 2006) - A frequent collaborator of UK pop-click producer (and CH favorite) Matthew Herbert, the talented vocalist Dani Siciliano returns with her second solo album, the beautifully minimal Slappers. Herbert’s influence here is clear (whether or not he actually produced this record isn't), but Slappers has its own distinctive sound as well. Both Herbert and Siciliano have the rare ability to successfully fuse pop and experimental...
Sónar 2006
(21 June 2006) - After our strange multimedia experience at Sonarama, it was time to get our dancing shoes on for Sónar. I was so enthusiastic about getting there that I was the first person off the first bus Friday night. Why in such as hurry you ask? Just one name: Gilles Peterson, the main man for funky soulful electro beats in the UK, with his amazing worldwide...
The Light Pick
(21 June 2006) - The Light Pick is a new pick from Santa Cruz Light Wells, a company that aspires to provide innovative products to musicians and music educators. Their first product is a combination pick (left or right handed) and metronome. The pick can be set for 20-240 beats per second; the small leds light it up to the beat. It can also be set to flash...
DJ Spinna: Intergalactic Soul
(20 June 2006) - DJ Spinna's upcoming release, Intergalactic Soul, is what you'd expect from this veteran of the New York hip hop scene who's remixed the likes of De La Soul and Das EFX and made beats for luminaries such as, Grand Puba, The Jungle Brothers, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Pharaohe Monch. Like his website says, on this album Spinna taps "into his perfected take on a...
Sonarama
(20 June 2006) - Ahhhh, summertime in Barcelona, can you feel the heat and the beats? Year-round this city's thumping to one rhythm or another, but summer months are a whole different story. For all the music festivals that descend on the town at this time of year, how anyone gets any sleep or does any work is a Catalan mystery. At its heart Barcelona is an electropolis...
Sufjan Stevens: The Avalanche
(13 June 2006) - Cherry-picking the best tracks from records, and jettisoning the filler is practically second-nature to the iPod generation. So when I say (Come On Feel The) Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens is far and away my favorite album released last year, you'll know how good it really is. Densely-packed with countless melodic ideas and intelligently-written lyrics about weird and surprising themes, it's almost like listening to...
Cool Hunting Video Presents: 8-Bit v5: Overview
(11 June 2006) -

In the last volume of our 8-bit series we discuss the sampling processes of artists who re-imagine the possibilities of lo-fi technology with New Media Curator, Ashley Colgate. We revisit Mike Rosenthal, Experimental Music Curator at the NYC performance space 'The Tank.' We also had the opportunity to speak with Montgomery Knott director of MonkeytownHQ, the innovative dining and performance space in Williamsburg. We asked them about their ideas on 8-bit music and the artistic process of manipulating limited technology as a form of expression. What follows is an overview on the future of the Chiptune sound.

Once in a Lifetime
(09 June 2006) - The recently-released Once In A Lifetime, is a solidly put-together documentary about the rise and fall of the New York Cosmos football club, but is probably not for those who aren't fans of the sport. However, It's immaculately-produced soundtrack is worth anyone's attention, taking in the sounds of the 1970s when the Cosmos was the most glamorous club in the world. It's easy toimagine...
A Rum Do
(08 June 2006) - The UK has to be the world capital for summer music festivals, led by the daddy of them all, Glastonbury. Roughly every five years, though, the festival isn't held. This 'fallow' year allows Somerset venue Worthy Farm a chance to regenerate and, inadvertently, it also allows other festivals to carve a bit of a niche for themselves. That's the case this year, and A...
Rewind 5
(08 June 2006) - If you got your hands on some of your favorite musicians’ iPods you might be surprised at what you’d find. That’s exactly the idea behind Ubiquity’s “Rewind!” compilation series. Now four years and five volumes deep, the series features established and emerging artists, handpicked by Ubiquity, covering the tunes of their choice. While the roster of artists is varied on Rewind 5, the source...
MOG
(07 June 2006) - As social networking sites become bigger and bigger people have a harder time finding new friends or meaningful stuff to share. As a result there is an increasing number of niche or topic focused sites coming on to the scene. The latest, MOG, is music focused and includes obvious but useful features like favorite artist this month or most recently played track. But what...
Max Sedgley: From The Roots To The Shoots
(02 June 2006) - With its urgent bassline and sample from the soundtrack of the cult movie The Taking of Pelham 123, Max Sedgley's Happy became an instant house classic when it was first spun in clubs a few summers ago. The original (and rare) Italian 12" also included the excellent Slowly, marking the multi-talented Englishman as one to keep a close eye on. And then nothing. After...

Alice Smith: For Lovers, Dreamers & Me
(01 June 2006) - Alice Smith’s For Lovers, Dreamers and Me, is a strikingly mature debut. Like the best pop music, it's original, genuine, and accessible. Characterized by soul-searching lyrics, tunes that are catchy without being cheesy, rich and subtle arrangements, and vocal performances that range from captivating to breathtaking, For Lovers journeys with ease through genres—from bluesy soul, to rock, to melodic pop, to country. The album...

But, lush horn arrangements, Swedish-Argentinean vocalist and guitarist José...
The Kings of Diggin'
(24 May 2006) - bbe Music's "Kings of" series. Muro's contribution is an epic 44-track long anthology that opens with soaring glam 70s disco with near-constant flute riffs and slowly makes its way into more James Brown-esque grooves. More funk-heavy still is Kon & Amir's disc that could easily be a soundtrack to a blacksploitation film or its Tarantino ripoff. Listening to either disc makes for a nerdy game...
Matthew Herbert: Scale
(23 May 2006) - Tireless musical innovator Matthew Herbert has never been one to simply rest on his laurels or make a simple pop record for entertainment value alone. In a career spanning jazz, house, techno and avant-garde, Herbert has always pushed boundaries stylistically, technically and thematically. Scale, his latest full length album, masterfully works on both the micro and the macro levels. It surprises, delights and questions...
