Dalek vs. Blacklisted EP
(10 October 2006) - Like the difference between reading a blog and reading a magazine, listening to mp3s (even with a feature like Coverflow) doesn't compare to owning an actual artist-designed 12". The first in a series of picture discs produced by Free News Projects, this edition of 800 features Dalek's trademark psycho mice on a four-track EP by the Philadelphia hardcore band Blacklisted. With more Philly-based releases...
yeastCulture
(10 October 2006) - How to describe yeastCulture? They are Mark Silver and Nick Hillel. They make stunning music videos for the likes of Nitin Sawhney and Jamie Cullum. In fact, they came up with the live visuals currently accompanying the aforementioned jazz-Hobbit on his North American tour. They can do it off-the-cuff too, and have VJ'd for artists as varied as the Beastie Boys and Matthew Herbert,...
Onkyo D-TK10s
(06 October 2006) - Based on the way acoustic vibrations resonate through the body of an instrument to create rich sound, Onkyo recently released these specially engineered D-TK10 speakers that take advantage of the entire speaker cabinet—rather than the traditional use of only the woofers and tweeters. Produced in partnership with renowned Japanese guitar maker Takamine, the gorgeously handmade rosewood-and-mahogany set measures under nine inches tall, making them...
Radio Citizen: Berlin Serengeti
(05 October 2006) - Weaving bright and multicolored strands of programmed sounds and live instrumentation into a lavish and virtually seamless fabric, Radio Citizen’s Berlin Serengeti, as the title suggests, is a transcontinental journey. Fusing African, Arabic, Latin, and European 60’s-era jazz and trippy rock sounds with a modern twist, the album balances vocal and instrumental tunes with wailing horns, driving yet nuanced drum tracks and sultry vocals—all...
Various Productions: The World Is Gone
(04 October 2006) - Admittedly this one's been a secret weapon in my DJ bag since I found it in the "Dubstep" bin at London's Rough Trade back in August, but seeing as how it's gotten little press stateside and it's due for a CD release in the U.S. 24 October 2006, perhaps it's time I shared... Various are truly enigmatic. Without any credits or liner notes on...
Christopher Willits: Surf Boundaries
(03 October 2006) - Christopher Willits may not yet be a household name but with previous releases for experimental labels like 12K, Sub Rosa and Plop and a list of collaborations with the likes of Kid606, Matmos, Taylor Deupree (12K), Latrice Barnett (Handsome Boy Modelling School), Paul D'Amour (Tool), and even Ryuichi Sakamoto, Willits has already laid a foundation for a strong following in indie electronic music circles...
Henrik Schwarz: DJ-Kicks
(29 September 2006) - What do James Brown, Marvin Gaye, D’Angelo, and Pharoah Sanders all share with German techno? Surprisingly, on the upcoming richly eclectic DJ-Kicks mix, these and others from the soul archives get German minimal house and techno producer Henrik Schwarz' treatment. Who would have guessed that a guy who makes sparse and moody electronic dance music had so much soul up his proverbial record sleeve?...
Latest from Nokia
(27 September 2006) - Yesterday was a big day for Nokia at their Open Studio event—eight new products, an indy store driven Music Recommenders service, David Bowie appearance, Gnarles Barkley concert, Om Malik panel discussion and a tricked out Mustang alongside a smoothie stand. All of this grounded by their new(ish) message that they make "multimedia computers with telephony capability" as opposed to mobile phones that do lots...
The Trip 2 Navigated by Tom Middleton
(26 September 2006) - You may remember that all the way back in March, we gave you an early tip-off that Tom Middleton would be following up his essential mix album for The Trip series on Family Recordings. In what we think is a bit of an exclusive for CH, we can finally reveal the artwork and tracklisting, both of which look like being worthy successors. Like last...
Cool Hunting Video Presents: Brian Dewan
(25 September 2006) -

In this, our 50th episode, we visit the Catskill, NY studio of artist Brian Dewan. His sculptures are pre-digital, unpredictable electronic musical instruments. Dewanatron, as he calls the genre, is a family of instruments which hazard unpredictable behaviors and self playing tendencies. They make all previous and future instruments obsolete. We also bring you to Pierogi Gallery where we first learned about Dewan.

Cybele Malinowski
(22 September 2006) - With an eye for capturing those dynamic moments when the stars (in this case, musicians) align, Cybele Malinowski is simply one of the hottest young photographers in Australia right now. Her work is full of life, spontaneous and exciting—making her one to keep a close watch on. ...
The Ballet: Mattachine
(22 September 2006) - I just got my copy of Mattachine, the debut CD from The Ballet. The handmade package features a simple triangular pattern printed on the disk, erotic drawings printed on a sheet of paper from a legal pad, and the liner notes suggest a very literal stemming of the rose from the attached pin. Self-proclaimed "Sissy-pop," The Ballet's debut CD features members of The Aislers...
What’s Going On?, Part II: Swedish Soul Food
(21 September 2006) - For most, Swedish music is one glorious name that comes to mind, ABBA. And if your music knowledge extends beyond wedding band classics, you might come up with something esoteric, like Roxette or Ace of Base. And if you are truly sophisticated, The Hives, The Cardigans, or neo-electro-rockers The Knife. Good stuff for sure. But funky? Soulful? F.R.E.S.H.? I discovered these folks in their...
Griffin iKaraoke
(14 September 2006) - Though likely already in the works before the mini-scandal back in April prompted by Apple's corporate form letter reply to a Northern California 3rd-grader who suggested a karaoke feature for iPods, Griffin's upcoming iKaraoke accessory should at least be validating for the young correspondent. Due out this coming Winter, the new microphone-based device plugs directly into iPod's universal dock, transmitting instrumentals and backup vocals...
What's Going On?, Part I: Pop Gets Its Groove Back
(14 September 2006) - With the recent resurgence of old-school hip-hop beats in Top 40 R&B, including this season's new releases from three of the heaviest pop hitters Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, the trend is undeniable: The breakbeat is back. Christina's "Ain't No Other Man," Beyoncé's "Suga Mama," and Justin's "Damn Girl," all funkier and dirtier than most mainstream hip-hop, are three examples of this "new"...
Cool Hunting Video Presents: Brazilian Girls: Nugroove vol. 4
(13 September 2006) -

On the heels of last week's review of Talk To La Bomb, Cool Hunting Video's 49th episode is an exclusive look at the Brazilian Girls that marks their latest album's release. Crossing multiple genres, representing a mutli-culti mix of ethnicities and with lyrics in five different languages, the New York-based band resists easy definition. Since last October, Cool Hunting Video has followed the quartet to the studio, caught live shows, and visited backstage, capturing candid, behind-the-scenes moments with the burgeoning group. The resulting video is a portrait of a band that's as eclectic as the musicians themselves. Like always, but especially for this installment, headphone use is recommended.

Brazilian Girls: Talk To La Bomb
(07 September 2006) - A carnival of futuristic retro-sounds, the Brazilian Girls' second full-length album, Talk To La Bomb, is like a trip to a smoke-filled red velvet circus tent in a fish-eye dream. The New York-based quartet's signature mix of sexy pop-house and stage theatrics (mainly on photogenic lead vocalist Sabina Sciubba's part) has made them international couture and music scene darlings and La Bomb is a...
Cool Hunting Video Presents: Hess is More: Nugroove vol. 3
(06 September 2006) - Mikkel Hess (aka
Hess is More), makes music for films, theater and multimedia (including a recent collaboration with the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen), has a current radio and MTV hit in Europe, and plays tennis. With his virtuosic ability to play multiple instruments and love of jazz and experimental electronica, Hess creates a sound palette that is all at once original, hypnotic and timeless. Cool Hunting Video caught up with him on the court and in the studio to discuss his creative process when he was in New York City this summer. You can also catch his work on the upcoming compilation Luftkastellet 4 or, if you're in Brooklyn, see his U.S. debut on 25 October 2006 at Monkeytown.
The Fratellis
(04 September 2006) - The Fratellis are a slightly cartoonish trio called Mince, Barry and Jon who have been touring the UK solidly since the Spring and are now reaping the rewards with their latest single Chelsea Dagger. They deserve it. It's a perfect slice of British, glam-tinged, swaggering power pop with a great rumbling bassline and do-do-do singalong chorus. Previous releases Creeping Up The Backstairs and Henrietta...
Easy Star All-Stars: Radiodread
(31 August 2006) - If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Radiohead should be blushing. Close on the heels of BBE’s collection of future-soul-tinged Radiohead reworkings, comes Radiodread, a surprising and impressive roots-style reggae remake of the band’s entire landmark album OK Computer. A tribute to the universal appeal of Radiohead’s songwriting, old-guard reggae luminaries Toots and the Maytals, Sugar Minott, Frankie Paul, The Meditations, Israel Vibrations,...

Linn Sondek LP12 Turntable
(22 August 2006) - Words like "standard" and "reference" are often used when describing the Linn Sondek LP12 turntable. First introduced in 1972 and tweaked (on the inside) over the last three decades, it remains a much loved (and occasionally hated) icon in the serious hi-fi scene. We're not qualified to extol about its technical benefits (or failures); we'll leave that up to the hi-fi aficionados. But we...
CH Video iMix
(21 August 2006) - If you've been watching Cool Hunting Video you may have also tuned in to our soundtracks. For each episode we select music from young and innovative artists that fit the story we're reporting. m ss ng p eces producer Ari Kuschnir has been curating music since 2003 under his Nugroove title and brings that wealth of experience to making these selections. Some of the...
