Operation Baby Drop
(21 June 2005) - Kudos to Mark Jenkins for making some of the most charmingly interesting street art I've seen in ages. With masterful craftsmanship, he's populated the streets of New York and D.C. with life-size babies made from nothing but tape. Jenkins fittingly calls the project Storker, the name he's also assigned to the race of clear creatures. They can be found climbing city streetlights, signs, billboards...

Jim Campbell
(06 May 2005) - If you're in NYC, there's just one week left to catch Jim Campbell's Material Light at the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery. And it's a must-see. Campbell's brilliant LED animations render sensuous yet eerie scenes with amazing depth considering the low fidelity out-put. This show includes work from the last four of his 20 years in making technological art, and features works in a new direction...

ICFF Preview: De Makers Van
(06 May 2005) - Jeroen Verhoeven, Judith de Graauw and Joep Verhoeven started Studio De Makers Van after graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven (Netherlands). Their primary intent seems to be taking common materials and re-visualizing them in innovative ways. Word is that they'll have some stuff at ICFF next week, so I'm definitely going to keep a look out for them. There are a few more pictures...

Living in a Box
(07 April 2005) - Last year, German design firm Transalpin conceived a way to pass electricity through wood and named it Wood.e. The 12V current doesn't actually pass though the wood; there's conductive material layered in to the plywood. This year, they created Living In a Box (above) as an example of how this innovative material could be applied. Normally separate pieces, chairs, tables, lamps and shelves, are...

JB Classics Spring 05
(17 November 2004) - Jason Bass, the modern day cobbler, is at it again. Here's a sneak peak at what to expect from JB Classics in Spring 05. The Esquire (left) is here to bring judgment and includes lots of laser detail, natural gum soles and a memory foam footbed for extra comfort. The Getlo (right) is an interpretation of urban 'mashed' fashion, featuring a slew of materials...

Transmaterial
(29 September 2004) - Transmaterial is a catalog of materials, products and processes that are redefining our physical environment. Edited by Blaine Brownell, the project started as a product of the week newsletter sponsored by the Seattle based architecture firm NBBJ. This incredibly comprehensive guide is as beautiful as it is informative. The entire 186 pages is available at transstudio.com as a downloadable .pdf file. ...

Nokia 2650
(14 June 2004) - Nokia announced 5 new phones today. Gizmodo has all the details. Overall, I'm not super impressed. They are doing a couple interesting things with materials, but the new clamshell designs are just kind of blah. I do really like the hinge on the 2650 (above). It almost looks like it disappears when the handset is open-- that's pretty cool. It's a very rare occasion...
