What Should I Read Next?
(21 September 2005) - For those of us that still enjoy and find the time to read actual books in this day and age, What Should I Read Next? is a little gift from the Database Gods that encourages literacy and for me to give my poor eyes a rest from my alternate life as an RSS crawler. It's fairly simple. You go to the website, enter a...

Fairpack
(24 August 2005) - Fairpack is Central Saint Martins student Mark Hadfield's Master's thesis and plan to reinvent the shopping bag as we know it. Still in development, Hadfield's project tasks designers with creating a graphic to adorn biodegradable plastic bags, recycled paper bags, and cotton bags as low-cost replacements for standard less eco-friendly sacks. His mission fuses ethics, design, and environmentalism to "unbrand" the common grocery bag,...

The Living Tower
(28 June 2005) - The Living Tower, by Pierre Sartoux presents a beautiful solution to a daunting problem. According to The Vertical Farm, by the year 2050, nearly 80% of the earth's population will reside in urban centers and that population will increase by 3 billion. The amount of land needed to feed this increased population will not be available. Therefor there's no place to go, but up....

Technology+Spa+Wellness=eq life
(24 June 2005) - eq life is a new retail concept that marries "health, wellness and technology in harmony." It looks pretty interesting to us. A former exec at Best Buy came up with the idea when a friend became ill and he felt there was an opportunity (and a need) to provide spa/salon services, beauty and wellness products and related technology products in one place. We'll check...

TiO2 Paint
(29 April 2005) - Last year the BBC reviewed a new glass coating that is self cleaning and anti-bacterial. Made from Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), the surface reacts with light to do its job. Two product extensions are now available from Japan-- TiO2 paint and household spray. They basically work the same way, reacting to sunlight, but are used to create more sterile interior spaces. As explained by Dr....

Epic 2014
(14 April 2005) - Robin Sloan and Matt Thompson have put together a pretty interesting vision of the media circa 2014. Basically they see all media becoming totally personalized and decentralized, driven by individual personalities and intelligent filtration systems. And of course, it's all enabled by Google and Amazon. They may take it to a bit of an extreme, but they certainly summarize a direction many of us...

Google Maps Meets Craigslist
(13 April 2005) - In my mind this little utility is simply just a genius mix. The cross pollination of two of the best resources available on the internet-- Google's new mapping service, and the classified listings page, Craigslist. This utility lets you surf both at once-- you can select city, price range, and drag along a map while seeing icons representing apartments for rent or sale. It...

(13 April 2005) - Studio Massaud, clearly have a wonderful imagination. These are computer generated images of a new soccer stadium set to look like a mexican volcano--they won a competition to design this new stadium. Advertisements will be projected on the "cloud" above, which will be made of stretched fabric to protect spectators from the elements. The rest of the stadium will be set inside the volcano...

Clocky
(08 April 2005) - Wake up, people! There’s finally a solution for those of us who just can’t get out of bed in the morning. The Clocky is an alarm clock on wheels. When the alarm clock goes off and the snooze button is pressed, Clocky, which is affectionately wrapped in brown shag carpet, will roll off the bedside table and onto the floor until it finds a...

Living in a Box
(07 April 2005) - Last year, German design firm Transalpin conceived a way to pass electricity through wood and named it Wood.e. The 12V current doesn't actually pass though the wood; there's conductive material layered in to the plywood. This year, they created Living In a Box (above) as an example of how this innovative material could be applied. Normally separate pieces, chairs, tables, lamps and shelves, are...

SNIF Petworking
(21 March 2005) - SNIF, or Social Networking in Fur, is a project from John Maeda's Physical Language Workshop at the MIT Media Lab. The idea is built on the age old notion of petworking-- meeting people through your pets. In their own words: "SNIF presents a hardware/software architecture that aims to capture pet social networks and other pet-related information as pets and their owners explore their communities."...

Scientistic Invitational: Call for Submissions
(03 March 2005) - I will be on the jury of IDSA-LA's first annual Scientistic Invitational, an interdisciplinary design exhibition seeking inventive and experimental projects. What makes this exhibition unique is that we'll be judging with a greater focus on creativity, process and theory than on the finished product. The deadline for submissions is next month, so hurry up and send your stuff in. More details after the...

Next month trials will begin to test the use of mobile phones for subway fare payment. No worries about dialing up the right screen or sending off a text message, the entire transaction will be handled by a small chip manufactured by...

(07 February 2005) - Volvo's coupe concept car, the 3CC, pushes the safety envelope in addition to having an adorable Trekkie style. (27 January 2005) - PALV, a revolution in personal transportation? Well, maybe-- but I don't think a personal air and land vehicle will work anytime soon. Bad traffic jam? No problem, lets just lift off and fly home--wait, don't hit that overpass! What a disaster waiting to happen. Could you imagine the air traffic with a highway full of people lifting off in there little PALV's? I like...
