LCDP Liquid Detergent for Delicate Textiles and Lingerie
(22 December 2006) - La Compagnie De Provence Marseille (LCDP), one of the most traditional and long-standing French soapmakers, reinvented lingerie soap with their Liquid Detergent for Delicate Textiles and Lingerie ($21). A happy marriage of edgy design, environmentalism and quality, the gothic lettering lends a mean streak but it's gentle enough for even your most precious clothes. It's also 98% biodegradable—not surprising since it is made exclusively...

Cacolac
(25 September 2006) - I love chocolate milk, and French brand Cacolac is king. Out of the brown bottles or vibrant cans, the drink is the perfect blend of sweet milk and real cocoa. Bizarrely, even though it's been around for quite a while, many French people I've spoken to have never even heard of it. Perhaps because it's quite hard to find in Paris, but it seems...

Leonardo Table and Chairs
(09 August 2006) - We all know that beautiful furniture can be sexy in a shiny, sleek and sinuous sort of way, but two young French designers Bertrand Clerc and Olivier Gregoire have made their furniture sexy in a physical and psychological way with their Leonardo table and chairs. What really makes furniture attractive is not just how it looks, but how we interact with it; the way...

Atypyk
(30 June 2006) - Like a cross between Duchamp and Archie McPhee, the French company Atypyk makes witty, conceptual gifts that play on everyday objects. My personal history with the company dates back to 2003 when I visited their Paris studio and Ivan Duval (one-half of the Atypyk team) regaled me with stories and sent me home with a Cowstick, a sticker kit that transforms a refrigerator into...

Battuta: The Zingaro Equestrian Theatre
(22 June 2006) - French "cavalier" poet and performer Bartabas combines an unimaginable hybrid of horses, horsemen, musicians, images, and dance under the roof of one virtual stable/stadium to create "Battuta," a wild performance art experience on the fence between popular and high art. In this new creation inspired by culture of "les Tziganes" or gypsies, Bartabas, with his troop Zingaro examines the infinite poetry of travel, along...

Livingstones
(04 May 2006) - Over at design*sponge, a lot of Grace's readers are getting excited about this pebble-like furniture, and it's easy to see why. Manufactured by a French firm, they're called Livingstones and come in various shapes and sizes, but all look like they have been picked up off a beach. I'd love to be relaxing in one right now, and it's got to make you wonder:...

L'Appartement 217
(20 April 2006) - Treatments at the first organic spa in Paris, L’Appartement 217, are so intricate they seem like they might be answers to eternal youth. Proprietor Stéphane Jaulin studied the biology of epidermal rejuvenation, arriving at the perfect menu of revivifying regimens. He offers them in a Parisian apartment space designed under the watchful eye of a Feng Shui master. Revered Dr. Hauschka’s treatments by Wala...

Montaigne Market
(18 April 2006) - Montaigne Market in Paris blooms like a garden of fashion between the conservative, single-brand storefronts of Montaigne Avenue. As the first multi-marque in the city of lights, the store engineers a confluence of current and classic styles from Paris, London, California, and New York. The 4,000 square foot space encourages mixing and matching of designers in different price tiers, an increasingly popular strategy put...

Chocolat Chapon
(21 March 2006) - Patrice Chapon trained and worked as a pastry chef and as an ice cream maker (to Queen Elizabeth nonetheless) before finding his true calling as a master chocolatier, which he has been doing for the last twenty years from his workshop in Paris. A sampling of some of his dark chocolate bars demonstrates his skill. The chocolate is dark but not too bitter. The...

Lac Chocolatier
(25 January 2006) - Pascal Lac is a well known patissier, chocolatier and glacier in Nice and neighboring Beaulieu sur Mer in the south of France. Locals worship his perfectly simple confections, and some of the best restaurants in the area serve his work with pride. A visit to one of his two stores is a total sensory overload. CHHQ is very grateful that our friend Lorin, a...

Green Tomato Jam
(15 June 2005) - I was intrigued by the concept, and am now a fan: Green Tomato Jam. An inspired balance of flavors and texture, and one of several fascinating jams made by L'Epicurean in France. A few to note: Gingerbread Clementine, Arbutus Berry, Sweet Potato, Melon with Vanilla Pod, Watermelon and Orange and Strawberry Champagne. ...

Chocolate-filled Eggshells by Bonnat
(11 March 2005) - The Bonnat family has been making chocolates in Voiron in the south of France since 1884. Their Hérisson (hedgehog) is a favorite of mine (a chocolate-covered hazelnut praline) and their single estate Grand Cru bars are intriguing. Our friends at Sur La Table are offering the Bonnat's chocolate and hazelnut praline-filled real eggshells-- at $35 for half a dozen eggs it's not a bargain,...

Millau Viaduct
(16 December 2004) - The Millau Viaduct recently opened up in France and was inaugurated by the French President Jacques Chirac. It was designed by the English architect Lord Norman Foster. It's the highest bridge in the world measuring at 343 meters (1125.33 ft) and creates a direct route between Paris and the Mediterranean coast using only seven slender pillars. So the next time I find myself road...

Super Sized Vuitton
(22 September 2004) - Though the French do seem to be eating a bit more McDonalds these days, they haven't lost sight of more interesting things to be super-sized. Instead of just covering the Champs Elysées Vuitton store with plywood for construction, they wrapped it in the classic LV print. They even went so far as creating faux hardware for the edges and corners. Lovely, really....
