Koons

Reed Barrow: Monument to an Amaranth
(31 January 2008) - Another experiment in reinventing the screen, New York-based sculptor Reed Barrow's LED chandelier, dubbed "Monument to an Amaranth," functions as a 360 degree display, playing a 12-minute video loop of abstract imagery. The teched-out fixture is a departure from Reed's other recent work, which tends toward absurd cultural interpretations (like a life-size werewolf sleeping in the web of a phosphorescent dream-catcher). Monument also has...

Kazuumi Takahashi: High Tide Wane Moon
(24 January 2008) - Japanese artist Kazuumi Takahashi's beautiful first monograph, "High Tide Wane Moon", explores the relationship between the moon and the ocean. Having grown up near the sea as the son of a fisherman, the schedule of the tides influenced his daily activities, just as the moon influenced the tides. In this large-format book, Takahashi presents 25 double-page spreads, each with a photograph of the moon...

Anthony Newman: Dangerous Diary
(22 January 2008) - Australian photographer and designer Anthony Newman has been exploring collage art with his latest series of works: "Originally started from a few mixed media paintings, the Dangerous Diary was born out of my need to explore collage. I was also really taken by the fact that new artwork could be created by found, and usually discarded, objects in my environment—bill posters, flyers, stuff left...

Edward Burtynsky: Quarries
(21 January 2008) - The celebrated Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky recently published a new book called "Quarries," which is also currently featured at London gallery Flowers Central. After his 2005 book on China, which looked at many aspects of their industrialized society and the 2006 award-winning documentary "Manufactured Landscapes," Burtynsky narrowed his focus to a very specific type of man-made landscape. The subject explores the scars left by...

Sarah Pickering: Fire Scene
(17 January 2008) - Sarah Pickering's photographs belong to the magical space that exists between reality and illusions. Capturing the unique bursts of smoke and light that resulted from detonating certain types of bombs including land mines, artillery, air fuel and even napalm, I was completely dazzled by her earlier photos of explosions taken during military training exercises. Her most recent body of work called "Fire Scene," now...

Lumas Editions Gallery, Melbourne
(17 January 2008) - Melbourne may well be miles from most of the world's cultural epicenters, but when it comes to appreciation of quality photographic art, Melbournians know their stuff. Perhaps that's why Lumas Editions decided to expand their global galleries by opening a Melbourne tangent just over a month ago. Located in the hip Little Collins Street precinct, Melbourne's Lumas Gallery continues the company's global reputation for...

(17 January 2008) - One of the hardest working typographers we know, Mike Perry is currently working on his second book. Check out the Brooklyn-based designer's first book, "Hand Job: A Catalog of Type," which is a great collection of hand-drawn type out out by Princeton Architectural press. It's hard to look at this site and not be motivated to get working too! ...

Steven Harrington
(11 January 2008) - Since we first heard about L.A.-based artist and designer Steven Harrington's work, he's apparently been busy. Some of his latest illustration recently reached my desk in the form of a beautiful holiday calendar from Daub and Bauble. Created at the Studio on Fire letterpress, Harrington's design features a proud peacock with Day of the Dead-style skulls. (Pictured above right.)Harrington, along with fellow artist Justin...

On Location: Chinatown and Lower East Side, NYC
(08 January 2008) - by Naomi Nevitt While the Lower East Side has savored its fair share of hype over the past few years—from the rebellious beginnings as a skate-punk mecca to its recent emergence as a blue chip design destination—the area south of Delancey has always been somewhat on the cusp of the real action. But with the recent opening of the New Museum, i.e.: the area's new...

Cool Hunting Video Presents: Michael DeLucia
(08 January 2008) - Following sculptor Michael DeLucia from his Brooklyn studio (shortly after completing studies in London) to his first gallery show, this video tells the story of a talented emerging artist's path. When we first visited Mike early last year, he showed us his current works incorporating industrial materials (brooms, mops, chain link fences) and walked us through some of his influences and ideas. Last December,...

Keetja Allard: Art Basel Miami Beach 2007
(07 January 2008) - For CH's fourth annual look at Art Basel Miami Beach, we decided to take a different approach. Rather than shoot videos as we've done the previous two years or report on the same old sights and sounds that the hundreds of other media outlets cover anyway, we opted to bring a different sort of visual stimulation. Instead we enlisted NYC-based photographer Keetja Allard armed...

Alex & Cocco
(04 January 2008) - Commercial and fine arts photographers Alex & Cocco says about their work, "All of my personal images are presented 'as shot' which I think for an advertising photographer is very important—relying on a strong understanding of the language of film rather than digital trickery to try and take a poor shot to a higher plane." Working together, their imagery will appeal to those who...

Kumi Yamashita
(03 January 2008) - If we had a third thumb, we'd give Kumi Yamashita three thumbs up. The Japanese artist creates stunning visual effects with lighting and simple forms, like letters of the alphabet, children's blocks and shoeprints. Yamashita finds the rare balance between beauty and brains....

Mapplethorpe: Polaroids
(02 January 2008) - I happened upon this new book of Robert Mapplethorpe's early Polaroids around the same time I read Ryan McGinley's recent interview of Jack Walls (Mapplethorpe's long-term boyfriend). Both the collection of black-and-white photographs and the interview are as great for their content as they are for insights into an era not usually glimpsed elsewhere. McGinley's involvement is like the exclamation mark highlighting how relevant...
