This Week in Tropolism
(11 November 2005) - It was a week of beginnings, with one ending. AMO (OMA, when they're not picking up redlines) begins a study for the Hermitage, an Olafur Eliasson show begins in Japan, a couple of show openings, and Tokyo retail rebirths abound! And, of course, we say farewell to Emigre, at issue 69....

S-Wert Designs
(09 November 2005) - Berlin-based S-Wert Design is a "critical homage" to the city, calling attention to gems of Berlin architecture and the way it's evolved - or hasn't evolved - in recent decades. Their wrapping paper series is an assortment of four designs, each one devoted to a different decade of Berlin's architecture from the fifties through the eighties. (See "Seventies," above.) Other standouts include the D.O.G....

This Week in Tropolism
(28 October 2005) - This week Tropolism went deeper into the complex lighting design for the beacon at 55 Water Street, including Tropolism's first architectural movie. The conversation with lighting designer Jim Conti has two parts. Our little post last week about diagonal inspiration seems to have taken a life of its own at other websites. Our Kahn knowledge was challenged. We didn't care. But we did ask...

This Week in Tropolism
(21 October 2005) - It was all about elevated public parks. Visiting the High Line (getting oh so close to stepping on it), while seeing some great art. Visiting the press junket for 55 Water Street, a park we designed in 2002. And, visiting the lovely new park at 55 Water Street to see what actually got built. We also visited upon a fellow blog an earnest question...

Luis Pons
(27 September 2005) - Four years ago, Luis Pons was farming and tending to his cows in Venezuela's Amazon jungle. Forced from the country due to political strife, these days the architect leads quite a different life as the principal owner and designer of his preeminent firm in Miami. Already well-known for his imaginative architecture, interiors, and objects, his latest foray is into jewelry. This week, his Magnetik...

Tropolism
(26 September 2005) - The world of Cool Hunting expands again: please welcome Tropolism to our little family. Tropolism explores the city through the eyes of architects. It calls attention to the art of architects, finds urban beauty wherever it may be, and otherwise revels in the pleasures of the dense city. It also is very skeptical about what architects have to say about their buildings. Its task...

Stones Hotel?
(25 August 2005) - After countless tours, millions of albums sold, drug busts, blood transfusions, extramarital affairs and more, you would think the Rolling Stones would run out of ideas to keep things exciting. But one look at the stage setup for their current “Bigger Bang” world tour (yes, it’s amazing that they’re actually able to get on stage and rock the shit out of stadiums the world...

The Ten Year Hotel
(03 August 2005) - Shipping container mania continues, this time in the form of students Lee Ferguson and Jonathan Whittaker's concept hotel that incorporates the temporality of cityscapes into its design. The 26-room building suspends the containers as self-contained pods within a steel beam grid, enabling both adaptability to changing surroundings and a sunken bar/concert area on the ground floor. via Hotel Chatter...

Wood Exorcist
(19 July 2005) - Yann Hervis is a rare craftsman of inlaid wood marquetry, bridging into contemporary art and interior design. His refined combination of precious woods humanizes the usually cold transit spaces of architectural projects: lobbies, doors, staircases, ceilings, elevators... In the process, while experimenting with the natural grains of wood, their colours, densities, textures, and natural dyes, he came to create his signature "palimpsests". By combining...

Chichu Art Museum
(23 February 2005) - I haven't had the pleasure of traveling to Japan yet, but very soon I'll be going on a cool hunting adventure there-- and I don't know if I'll ever return! One place I must stop as I'm on tour around Japan is The Chichu Art Museum. It's only accessible by boat, and Tadao Ando designed it to be completely built into the ground and...
