Ruth Marshall
(09 December 2005) - The highlight from Scope was undeniably Ruth Marshall and her acumen for craft-work combined with a nutty sense of humor. When the Australian born artist isn't at her day job sculpting exhibits at the Bronx Zoo, she's still committed to her love and fascination for animals. Presented by Dam, Stuhltrager, these knitted animal pelts are a delightful comment on both the trophy and the...

Sam's Yams
(30 November 2005) - Sam's Yams are a newly discovered dog treat that CH mascots Otis and Logan are all over. Having heard recently about more than one incident involving the healthy looking "green" chews that are mostly corn starch, and others about rawhide, these all-natural treats are all the more welcome. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but all of them are 100% dried...

Jeanie M.
(10 November 2005) - Jeanie M. is an artist and taxidermist from San Francisco. After several years photographing roadkill a friend (?) passed along a dead mouse that their snake passed on. She took this as a sign and started making whimsical scenes with small animals (mostly mice). She also teaches taxidermy at Paxton Gate, an eclectic and inspired store in San Francisco....

Ontour Tees
(05 October 2005) - The Grimm's fairytale of the Bremen Town musicians tells the fable of a donkey, dog, cat, and rooster who, fed up with their day jobs, venture into the world to pursue lives as musicians. For Ontour, a new line out of the Netherlands, the tale was inspiration to launch their clothing label and became the source material for the four shirts in their debut...

Salvor
(04 October 2005) - Though we've loved Salvor T-shirts and pillows for a long time, it was only last week that we had the chance to meet Ross, the creative mastermind behind the brand. A man of many interesting projects, he ties them all together through his attention to graphic detail. This Fall he's introducing a few new animals to his repertoire of t-shirts. Dog Skull is printed...

Afke Golsteijn
(21 July 2005) - Dutch artist Afke Golsteijn isn't the first to work with dead animals as her medium, but none quite achieve the same sweetly creepy aesthetic that comes from her joining of taxidermy and finely wrought details. Equal parts Edgar Allan Poe, Grimm's Fairytales (she calls them "Contemporary Fairytales"), and a more feminine David Altmejd, Golsteijn's work at times reads like a literalized metaphor, such as...

Werkburo
(23 May 2005) - Werkburo is a Canadian site that is currently selling a nice line of t-shirts from a small group of independent artists from all over the world. Artists like Michael Place and Basit Khan came together to make up the first artist series. This shirt design by Khan is a tribute to the Islamic calligrapher Hassan Massouidi, and the renewal of one of his well...

Licorice Piglets
(20 April 2005) - Nothing says I love you quite like a box of piglet shaped licorice... Route 29 Napa makes a variety of tasty licorice, but my favorite are the black and red licorice pieces shaped like piglets. The bags are a better deal, but the can (16 oz for $14) is a great gift. The Chewy Peps have a nice balance of texture and flavor and...

+d 3D Frame
(26 January 2005) - + d is a Japanese design company. They're the ones that make those nifty sentimental animal rubber bands that you can use and throw away like normal rubber bands, but don't want to cause they're just so gosh darn cute! They also have this 3D frame that allows you to display your three dimensional memories like shells, baby teeth, or whatever weird things you...

iDog
(25 January 2005) - Other than being hypnotically cute, this lil pooch can serenade you with a couple of songs and you can hook up your MP3 player to it too. The iDog is produced by Sega Toys. The speaker is on its belly and its head and ears move. Unfortunately it seems to be only available in Japan. *sigh* Looks like I won't be the envy of...

Scott Wotherspoon
(21 January 2005) - There was this other beautiful illustration of birds that Scott Wotherspoon did for the Balcony Jump Artists identity that I considered putting up, but I just couldn't help myself. Deviance should never be dished out in moderation! Anyway, other than having a really cool last name, Scott is an illustrator based in lovely London whose personal and commercial work is light, clean, and playful....

Victimless Leather
(20 October 2004) - Tissue Culture and Art Project may be reminiscent of Dr. Frankenstein's lab, but they certainly are up to some fascinating work. Currently they are growing a jacket out of immortalized mouse and human cells. One day this may be an alternative to to killing animals for their hides, but in the mean time the project is meant to prompt a dialog about environmentalism, sustainability...

Front Design
(09 July 2004) - Photos by Anna Lonnerstam Front Design is a Stockholm based studio run by gorgeous women who make gorgeous things. The radio, cd player and mp3 player above are just a few samples of their work-- all of which challenges conventional notions of both product and process. They also have a line of home decor products that are made in collaboration with animals. Wallpaper chewed...

Air Traffic Ant Farm
(11 June 2004) - The Aviation Systems Division of the NASA Ames Research Center has published an animation of a day in the life of air traffic over the continental US. We all know there are lots of planes in the air at once, but you don't really understand until you see something like this. What has me absolutly fascinated is how similar these patterns are to the...

Animals on the Underground
(26 February 2004) - Animals on the Underground identifies the hidden animal pictograms in the London Tube map. The Tube map is already an information design icon -turns out it's cute and fun as well....
