Much love and thought are going into the redesign of cargo bikes, such as Porterlight’s new customizable option, to make them less intimidating and more enticing for regular personal use. Oakland, California-based Xtracycle offers the Edgerunner—which they’ve dubbed the “ultimate cargo bike”—and their intro model, the 24D (whose name comes from its 24 speeds), balances performance and value.
Ross Evans founded the company when he hatched the idea to help Nicaraguan farmers weld simple cargo bikes, which were a safe, environmentally friendly way to bring their produce to sell at local markets. Seeing their capabilities in action, Evans brought his cargo bike design back to California and started Xtracycle to meet the demands of people stateside who wanted an option besides to driving to grab groceries, take kayaks to the beach, wheel kids around and more.
The Xtracycle EdgeRunner 24D is long enough to fit up to three children on the back along with the large carrying bags with PVC-free lids and straps, all of which come with the bike. A strong kickstand keeps it sturdy, wide tires make riding smooth, strong responsive brakes work well in any weather conditions, and the steel frame has a lifetime warranty. Most importantly, the company gives a percentage of revenue annually to non-profit organizations and bicycle advocacy groups to strengthen the sense of community.
