Patricia Urquiola + Glas Italia: Shimmer

Colorful fluidity in a robust glass table

Patricia Urquiola's poetically contemporary "Shimmer" table is brilliant in both its concept and physicality. Made from iridescent glass with a multicolored finish, the small tripodal table reacts with light, which allows its surface to seemingly change hue depending on your vantage point. The graceful shifts in color lend it a balletic energy, and the lack of construction materials (the parts are joined with glue) keeps the focus on its prismatic effects.

Of the striking range of glass projects Glas Italia showed at Salone del Mobile this year—including a thoughtful inaugural collection from the Bouroullec brothers as well as Piero Lissoni's exquisitely simple "Labyrinth" tables—Urquiola's "Shimmer" was the Italian glassmaker's (slightly) hidden gem. Those in New York for the upcoming ICFF and NYCxDesign week can see the Milan highlight at DDC, where it will be on view and available for purchase. Depending on size and finish (glossy or opaque), the table ranges from $2,540 to $2,987.
