Bursting with talent and plenty of places to show it off, New York as a design story is arguably a massive late pass. But, as MoMA Store proves by selecting the Big Apple as this year's design destination, the concept is evergreen when the resource is a city that never sleeps. The 11th edition of MoMA's destination series—which has included Seoul, Portugal, Japan and Brazil in recent years—looks at the five boroughs with fresh eyes, and the smart selections reflect both the museum's knack for remaining on point, as as well as the creativity pumping through NYC.
A sure standout from the surplus of goods is byAMT's gorgeous leather strap basket, created by Alissia Melka-Teichroew specifically for Destination NYC. Each basket is woven by hand in New York with unfinished leather, which allows the basket to change in color and develop a unique patina over time. And with durable straps secured by hefty rivets, it will last for generations to come.
Other highlights include a reissue of Massimo Vignelli's classic Heller Max mugs in a range of vibrant colors, a MakerBot Replicator 2, Brooklyn Toile Flavor Paper wallpaper designed by Beastie Boy Mike D, Sophie Blackall's "Missed Connections" greeting cards, Lauren Tickle's meticulously crafted "$16.50 Necklace" and boucle zip pouches by Sandy Chilewich.
Kids also have a few things to look forward to, including Leah Dumigan's button stool, which helps little ones learn to tie a knot, and her animal eye chart print, which eschews the alphabet for friendly faces of koalas, pigs and bunnies.
MoMA Design Store Destination: NYC arrives online and in MoMA Stores 15 May 2013.
