While the work of Charles and Ray Eames is practically synonymous with Herman Miller for most of us in the States, several works by the prolific designers are actually under license by Vitra in Europe and much of Asia. This duality of production and distribution mainly serves to promote beautiful design across the globe, but it can also occasionally give rise to some rather unique re-issues, which happens to be the case with Vitra's excellent new Eames Collection Update. Developed in collaboration with the Eames Office and launched this week at Salone del Mobile in Milan, the update sees six iconic pieces released in a range of previously unavailable colors, with black being the absolute show-stopper.
Extending to four of the six pieces, the all-black color scheme covers the perpetually coveted Lounge Chair and Ottoman, Plastic Chairs, Wire Chair and through to the pedestal-like Stool, Model D. The simple tweak in hue manages to give the already legendary designs a brilliant new attitude. Black lacquered ash gives the Stool, Model D and Lounge Chair and Ottoman shell their distinct look. The Plastic Chair models DSW and DAW will be available in all-black plastic and fabric, while the Wire Chair models DKR and DKW will be powder-coated black for "a homely touch." All chair models will be topped off with a black lacquered maple base and black aluminum hardware.
The update also sees some color and size adjustments to the Hang-It-All and Storage Unit ESU. Exclusively from Vitra in Europe and Asia, the updated collection will be available shortly through direct orders only. Unfortunately this means those in North America will be left in the cold, so time to cozy up with any old friends you may have across the pond. For more information keep an eye on Vitra.
