Cool Hunting
Our favorite ode to weird music and the singular satisfaction of printed artifacts, the Journal of Popular Noise's latest issue recently launched. Produced in limited editions of hand-folded, letter-press printed copies, the semi-annual audio magazine simultaneously recalls the joys of high-end design periodicals, photocopied punk rock fanzines and the intricate liner notes and packaging of the seven-inch.
We like the new special edition so much that we decided to give three away to lucky and loyal Cool Hunting readers.
The new Journal, produced in an edition of 300, features selections from Foscil's album Residential.
According to Journal mastermind Byron Kalet, “In 2008 Foscil participated in an artist residency at the now defunct BLVD gallery in Seattle. These recordings are the end result of the experiments and performances that took place between January and June of last year.”
To enter, go to the bottom of the page, click on "Contact" and select "Journal of Popular Noise Giveaway." Tell us about your favorite experience with a music-based printed artifact—your most treasured old 'zine, the craziest seven-inch packaging you discovered at Amoeba or maybe just your favorite seamless integration of music and print. Our three favorites will receive a free copy. Submissions must be received by midnight EST, 24 November 2009.

Co-founder and editor Jason Crombie wants his new pocket-size zine, Wooooo, to be "funny and stupid," which is pretty much exactly why I liked it when I found a copy in a Nolita restaurant the other day. Distributed in and around the Lower East Side, the (almost) quarterly publication runs interviews of people who, even if they exist on the mainstream radar, aren't usually...
The Beatles stereo box set, an expertly remastered collection of every Beatles song ever made, has audiophiles and Beatles fans equally excited. A massive undertaking, the sixteen-disc collection includes extremely cleaned-up editions, leading All Things Considered host Bob Boilen to say "it's like watching your favorite movie in HD for the first time." While EMI also released a mono version, the crystal-clear stereo tracks...
It's impossible not to love at least one of Radiohead's melodramatic tunes, but for those who resonate with the music on a grander scale we have a handsome opportunity to fulfill your limited edition dreams. Radiohead's first three studio albums have been released by Capitol/EMI Records in expanded "collector's edition" packages. Pablo Honey (1993), The Bends (1995) and OK Computer (1997) will be available...
Icelandic band Sigur Rós celebrates their fifth and latest album, Meó suó í eyrum vió spilum endalaust, with a deluxe edition cloth-bound hardback book which includes 200 pages of fine art photos, a CD of the album and a DVD shot in Super 8 chronicling the band on the road at shows in England, Mexico and America, including their stop at this year's Bonnaroo Festival...
If CH was ever to go print, we'd like to think we could execute it with the same thoughtful elegance as the semi-annual audio magazine The Journal of Popular Noise, which is why we're excited to be sponsors of the latest issue's launch. This time around the limited-edition (only 300 are made) and letter pressed publication includes Climax Golden Twins, PWRFL Power and Linda...
Want to know who your favorite bands are listening to? My Secret Playlist does just that by inviting guest bands, DJs, producers and musicians to write about what they're rocking out to at the moment. The simple but addictive concept is published by Conversant Media, the Australian media company that produces Lost At E Minor, a friend and content partner of CH....
