Cool Hunting
by Richard Prime
Fusing local craftsmanship traditions with modern techniques, designs and colorways, Portuguese design brand Boca do Lobo's furniture never fails to charge the senses.
Crochet, the latest and a masterstroke of overindulgence, prevents the eye from settling. (Pictured above.) Glittery swaths of dark blue brass layered over the entire gold leaf surface make for a chest that we can imagine in Liberace's living room.

The piece sits well in Boca Do Lobo's range, which includes the Mondrian chest of drawers—released last year to widespread acclaim—the insanely opulent Diamond and the cityscape on legs they call D. Manuel.
Each new product makes clear how the young company embraces the idea that you're only as good as your last concept. Whether it's the SoHo Collection or Boca Do Lobo's Limited Edition range, strikingly high production values are core to the brand.

Yesterday at the Fiera Milano, walking through the sprawling campus of the supergroup Poltrona Frau, I ran into the New York designer Stephen Burks, who took a moment to chat with me about his new line of eco-conscious ware for Italian manufacturer Cappellini. Called Cappellini Love, the collection is comprised of a series of vases and bowls made from glass fragments, and a small...
The bio-energetic Hara chair from Kundilini is a refreshing modern twist. Handmade in lacquered fiberglass, the designers aspired to create an ecstatic product, as well as an aesthetic one. I think they succeeded....
A lyrical study of glassblowers Justin Parker and Andi Kovel's (aka Esque's) process, this video nicely compliments the 2007 mini-documentary Cool Hunting made on their studio. With a neat visual effect that makes the glass look hand-colored in an otherwise primarily black-and-white scene, filmmakers Mike Call and Boone Speed show the playfulness and intensity that goes into making their work. Spotted at this year's Habitat Valencia, the Galaxy Reclining Armchair by Spanish manufacturer CasaDesús blends space age style with suburban functionality. The sleek chair, designed by company founder Jaime Casadesús, puts to shame every La-Z-Boy in existence with minimal lines, luxurious upholstery options and automated articulations. Just now making inroads into the American market—currently available through Moura Starr—CasaDesús produces an opulent range of furnishings...
Azzedine Alaïa gallery recently unveiled an original 28-year retrospective of Memphis design now on display in Paris. Conceived by a gaggle of talented—and tipsy—architects and recently making a comeback in the design world, the Memphis movement came of an evening spent endlessly listening to Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde. The Milan-based architects—led by the late Ettore Sottsass—decided to name their group after the southern...
by Zeva Bellel Porcelain artist Maïa designs and hand-paints every incarnation of her delicate china in her Paris atelier. Sourcing plates, vases and more from one of the last remaining artisanal factories in Limoges, France, Maïa’s passion for well-made ceramics carries through to her methods, creating distinct pieces for each client. The tailored process involves one-on-one meetings at Maïa's Paris apartment and showroom, where...
