Cool Hunting
Signed to Swedish label Flora and Fauna, The Bethlehem Beard Corporation consists of a 15-year-old melancholic Swede. Here at CH we’ve been listening to his latest disc When the Beards Met in Bethlehem on a regular basis, enough so that we contacted our good buddy Jonas at the Swedish Model to get some interview questions over to the artist. See his answers below.
I noticed that you play all but one of the instruments on your album, why is that?
Basically that's just the way it ended up. It would have been great
to have more than just one main instrumental force behind the music
but at the time of recording the album it was easier to layer a bunch
of guitars instead of having a full band.
Where does the name come from?
A film that I saw a long time ago. At least I think so. And yeah, beards are cool.
Who made your album art?
The album cover is actually a painting which my two friends
painted. Anatol Wyss and Pascal Fogelberg are two very good people and
great artists as well.
Is it tough to get shows because of your age?
No, not tougher than it is for anyone else.
How did you get signed to Flora and Fauna?
I'm close friends with Daniel Savio, who used to be signed to Flora and Fauna
with one of Sweden's greatest musical gems Hundarna från Söder, and
through him I got in touch with Henrik von Euler at the label.
Who are your main influences, both in music and life?
I like Sean Price a lot and I always try to copy scientists when it
comes to recording. In life, ehh, anyone who's good with paranoia.
Do you plan on putting together a full band so you can tour?
It would be great to be part of a band and hopefully this project
might evolve into something reminiscent of that. When it comes to
playing live there are several ways around the "lonely guy with a
guitar singing" cliché but for now I'm sticking with it.
What got you into music?
I don't know really. I've always listened to a bunch of stuff,
but hearing Elmore James for the first time was cool.

So we heard the most amazing unsigned band in Williamsburg, Brooklyn the other night. Except we were at a noodle and dumpling bar called Snacky and the band was blaring from an iPod. Norwegian-by-way-of-Sweden Ida Maria and her bandmates are sure to be the next hot-shit-of-the-moment and their song "Oh My God" will not stop playing in our collective brain. Currently self-released on their...
Kids sporting laminates on NYC subways signals CMJ's descent on the city once again. Friends of CH, The Roulettes—a band accepted into the music showcase on their first try—put together an awesome lineup that we're sponsoring this Saturday. Other bands performing include Red Wire Black Wire, Renminbi, Sini Anderson, The Fancy and Beluga and we're stoked to be on board with co-sponsors Etsy (who...
Likely due to their home state, name and penchant for upbeat chord progressions, Florida's Holiday Shores draw comparisons to a slew of feel-good bands like Wavves, Beach Fossils and the Beach Boys, to name a few. But writing them off as surfer-dude tunes misses the mark. The band wisely tempers sunny melodies with a healthy dissonant sheen, such that each carefully-crafted pop melody comes...
The first video from Brooklyn's piano-drum duo Glass Ghost looks like it could have a copyright two decades old. Produced by Peking (the outfit behind numerous CH videos), the "Like a Diamond" video cobbles together a seemingly random collection of home videos, some with singer Eliot Krimsky superimposed over it, others left in all their retro glory. The edit intersperses shots of Krimsky posturing...
The first proper full-length from Brooklyn's Polite Sleeper, Lake Effect serves up nine songs straddling the hazy line between folk and indie rock. At turns somber and frenetic, singer/guitarist Jason Orlovich's earnest vocal timber and everyday observations echo more recent Mountain Goats records. Rounded out by Michael Curtes (keys and vocals) and Tim Wilson (drums and vocals), the group shows remarkable range and versatility...
by Julie Wolfson While artist Nate Duval's online bio lists trip planning and de-fingerprinting his iPhone screen among his favorite activities, the bulk oh his interests relate to music. So it's no wonder that the fan of Neon India, The Band, Mulatu Astatke, Hacienda, Phoenix, Blind Pilot, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, among many, many other bands, has garnered quite a reputation in a...
