Cool Hunting Rough Cut: Rock The Garden 2009 by Cool Hunting Video

By Max Gold

Showcasing music from near and far, Minneapolis's summer fete Rock The Garden features bands hand-picked by local radio station 89.3 The Current and takes place within the enormous Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center. Before the music started, we had a chance to talk to MPR host Mary Lucia as well as Philip Bither, the senior curator, about the state of American music. After the garden was rocked, we had the privilege of chatting it up with headliners Solid Gold, Yeasayer and Calexico.

The first proper full-length from Brooklyn's Polite Sleeper, Lake Effect serves up nine songs straddling the hazy line between folk and indie rock. At turns somber and frenetic, singer/guitarist Jason Orlovich's earnest vocal timber and everyday observations echo more recent Mountain Goats records. Rounded out by Michael Curtes (keys and vocals) and Tim Wilson (drums and vocals), the group shows remarkable range and versatility...
Spindrift x J.X. Williams Tour
Spaghetti Western rockers Spindrift are making their way west where their reverberated guitars hang on a minor chord like a magenta sunset over a high desert playa. Unique to this tour, they've been granted permission to use imagery from the reclusive J.X. Williams, whose all-but-lost horror spectaculars changed cinema forever. Director Noel L awrence, the keeper of William's archives, secured permission from the elder...
Solid Gold
Minneapolis is usually know for being cold, but as the music scene there intensifies, it's beginning to be known for stellar indie bands like Solid Gold. We can't stop listening to the cheeky synth-pop trio and their most recent album, "Bodies of Water." The repeat-worthy tracks are sharp but full of smooth, ethereal melodies that float around and consume your head. The name Solid...
