Cool Hunting

Dreaming up chicken liver mousses and pairing foie gras with maple syrup, talented chef Ludovic Lefebvre's summer pop-up restaurant LudoBite makes other food taste boring in comparison. The graphic sign, an angry rooster sporting a heart tattoo and wielding a large knife, lets diners know they have found the right Los Angeles locale.
Ludo aims to both challenge and please his customers, coming up with creative and unusual dishes that still delight. The menu features ingredients prepared with innovation and flare, but with attention to subtlty and taste. His cold Chorizo Cantaloupe Cornichon soup (pictured above) features a chorizo base with cubes of cantaloupe and cornichon ice, garnished with orange flowers. Somehow, he makes the combination of spice, sweet, and salt work. A focus on fresh and local ingredients caters less to current trends than it does to the time-tested tradition of seasonal French cuisine; as Ludo reminds, French chefs cook seasonally all the time.
Ludo's own experience includes a stint as the executive chef at L'Orangerie and Bastide, as well as a recent spot on an episode of Top Chef Masters. In the episode, faced with making street food from pig's ears, he made quesadillas. Not only does the show highlight his creativity, but in his accompanying home video highlights his joy in the kitchen, intensity at the gym working out and a big smile during a volleyball lesson.
This summer Ludo's focusing his devotion to his food at Ludobites, housed it in the casual, modern atmosphere of Silverlake's BreadBar. Prices range from $10-28. with opening hours on Tuesday-Saturday evenings. Visit OpenTable to make reservations.

Substantially-sized, fully-stocked and visually-engaging, Poketo's first Pop-Up Shop debuted this past weekend for a three-week stint at Royal/T in Los Angeles, the Japanese-style cafe and gallery known for its waitresses in French maid costumes. In addition to offering Poketo's trademark artist-designed wallets and tees, the launch kicks off a new line by Apak, with tees and a mug, plus a new shirt by James...
On a recent trip to Los Angeles I had the pleasure of experiencing the palatial restaurant and gourmet market Bottega Louie. I expected the newly opened establishment, located in the downtown business district, to be barely percolating with traffic on the weeknight I visited. Instead, the 185-seat dining hall, which features soaring 20 foot ceilings, banquette-style seating and a view of the grand open...
Located just blocks from Little Tokyo, in downtown LA's Arts District, the exotic sausage grill and beer hall Wurstküche is raising the bar on comfort food with a menu that includes classics such as bratwurst and hot Italian, a variety of gourmet sausages filled with spices, cheeses and herbs, and exotic options such as alligator and rattlesnake. Grilled to a steamy perfection and ready...
If you haven’t heard about the wonders of Pinkberry, it's neither a new fragrance nor a nasty skin condition but rather a frozen yogurt phenomena that's already taken over LA and recently opened their first NYC location in Koreatown. Available in only two flavors, plain and green tea (although I've heard no one ever gets the green tea), it’s the many toppings—fresh fruit, crunchy...
Tucked behind a modern cement facade, Jin Patisserie is a garden oasis in a sea of eclectic store fronts. Kristy Choo, a Singaporian woman who was inspired by her regular trips to Japan as a flight attendant, moved to San Francisco and studied pastry at the California Culinary Academy. Now she reigns over her intimate tearoom among the trend setting shops on Abbot Kinney...
The joint effort of a former Californian and a Boston chef, the new taco spot Dorado brings authentically fine-tuned Mexican to Boston's Brookline area. When myself and two other former Californians (credit one of them, photographer-savant James Ryang, for these pics) were invited to visit recently, we left longing for a similarly well-priced and delicious restaurant in NYC—no small compliment coming from a group...
