Cool Hunting
For Milan this year Veuve Clicquot is launching their new eco-friendly gift box called DesignBox. To celebrate, an exhibit featuring interpretations of the box—a lamp by Tom Dixon (pictured at right), Front Design's sofa and a cellar by 5.5 Designers—opens tomorrow in Milan. In keeping with Dixon's customary generosity at design fairs, his lamp (limited to an edition of 500) will be given away at tomorrow's opening. (For those who won't make it, we've scored one to giveaway to a lucky reader, see details of how to enter below.)
Due to hit markets in June, the DesignBox is no slouch itself, making for a chic way to present a bottle that belies the sustainable principles behind it. Using paper exclusively from trees approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, a non-profit that helps maintain responsible management of forests and skipping plastic lamination, the all-paper packaging is easily recyclable. What's more, micro-grooving helps reduce the amount of packaging and potential waste.
To enter to win one of Dixon's lamps, follow the contact link at the bottom of the page, select "DesignBox Giveaway" from the pull-down menu and tell us which designer you'd like to see Veuve Clicquot collaborate with next by Thursday, 23 April 2009.

Droog's current exhibit on the Foro Buonoparte as part of Milan's design week, called "A Touch of Green," attempts to address the imperfections and issues of sustainability with products that hint at eco-consciousness, while making no pretenses about resolving the matter. Martin Azua's "Plaited fence" is a simple galvanized iron frame stitched together with vertical strings through which users can weave a medley of...
While the timing seems less than ideal to launch a high-end furniture company, the new Italian brand Skitsch certainly made a go of it during last week's Salone del Mobile. With a broad collection of seating, tables, storage, lighting and accessories from a who's who roster of today's youngest design talents, Skitsch is clearly trying to position itself amongst the design world vanguard. While many...
The British manufacturer Established & Sons vaulted onto the design scene just five years ago as if out of nowhere. Despite the cheekily ironic assertion of heritage suggested by their name, a rambling selection of products that makes up their ouevre to date gives a sense of a company yet in its infancy, with frequent missteps and disappointing additions among the gems that have...
The University of Art and Design Lausanne, or ECAL, has been consistently turning out some intriguing talent under the directorship of Martin Schgaguler. While the curriculum teaches students to each hone their own identity, there remains a distinct style that sets the school's program apart from that of, say Design Academy Eindhoven or the RCA in London. An attention to detail and a poetic simplicity...
Although last night was the official start to the Milan Design Week, travelers who arrived early on Monday were treated to a good old fashioned pop-up shop party thrown by Andy of Reference Library and the folks from Apartamento Magazine. In true guerrilla fashion, the Everyday Life Objects Shop features rough and ready display fixtures designed and assembled on-site by the British designer Max Lamb,...
Milan Design Week is in full swing and while last night's press preview at Superstudio Piu in Zona Tortona was a slightly tamer affair than in previous years, the work on exhibit holds promise for an exciting week ahead. The line-up at Superstudio changed somewhat this year, though standard bearers such as Tom Dixon and Moooi returned with a host of new designs. Moooi's installation...
