MoMA Atlantic/Pacific by Karen Day

In a new initiative taking art far outside the museum walls, MoMA sprinkled the Atlantic/Pacific subway station in Brooklyn with 58 reproductions from the MoMA collection. We got the chance at the press preview this morning to check out the "station domination," a temporary large-scale installation that includes the works of well known artists like Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Georgia O'Keeffe, Man Ray and plenty of others that are sure to inspire commuters jetting through on their way to the next place or entertain those who care to linger and peruse the collection.

Conceived by Doug Jaeger, founder of thehappycorp, the purpose of the underground campaign is to create a greater awareness of the MoMA collection housed at their Midtown location. For casual passersby, signs posted at payphones throughout the station instruct on how to dial the toll-free MoMA factline for audio information about the works, but planners can download the full audio commentary to iPods, making it that much easier to get a little cultured. In addition to the audio features, a customized project website includes a map and guide to the artworks.

Tropolism: John Powers
Rekindling dormant grade and grad school fantasies at Tropolism today, Brooklyn-based artist John Powers' geometric sculptures, installations, drawings, and paintings reference fine art, pop culture, and his own obsessively imagined, completely fantastical worlds. Triggering deep childhood fantasies of "landscapes like the surface of the Death Star in Episode IV: A New Hope," as well as memories of architecture models, Tropolism picks the Sci-Fi Wahabi...
Brooklyn Is Burning III
by Franklin Melendez The art queers are at it again, offering the third installment of the much talked about video/performance series, Brooklyn Is Burning. Curated by Sarvia Jasso and Andres Bedoya, the one-night event takes gender bending to whole new heights, featuring the work of emerging artists interested in expanding the boundaries of sex, sexuality, the body and whatever is left in between. Past efforts...
J. Howells Werthman: We Are Making Plans
J. Howells Werthman (JHW), a brooklyn native and co-founding member of the Nuclear Family music collective, recently released his first solo album We Are Making Plans. Taking advantage of Nuclear Family's "extensive community of music makers and artists, guys we've been doing shows with for years," the carefully crafted album features a curated list of guests that proves hip hop lives on. Although JHW...
Banksy Versus Bristol Museum
by Ariston Anderson Street artist Banksy makes breaking the rules an artform, but his current exhibit, a legal installation of over 100 pieces at Bristol's City Museum & Art Gallery is surprising even his closest followers. Playing on earlier covert stunts that targeted the Tate and MoMA, in an unusual reversal, this time the institution welcomes the anonymous artist with open arms for his...
