Cool Hunting
"All the Wrong People Have Self-Esteem: An Inappropriate Book for Young Ladies or, Frankly, Anybody Else” is the title of illustrator and author Laurie Rosenwald’s latest book and perhaps one of the best titles ever. (We wonder, has it been optioned?)
Laurie is generally known for her “hand-made-like” illustrations for magazines like the New Yorker and companies like Ikea, but she writes great books too. “All the Wrong People Have Self-Esteem” is hard to describe. Laurie has never had a teenager of her own and hasn’t been one for years. And she claims she doesn’t want to tell anyone what to think. The graphic novel is an interactive collection of in-your-face rants, witty observations, sly anecdotes, collages, lovely pictures, flirt cards, fill-in-the-blanks and non-sensical games. Chapters include The PMS Collection Agency, Really Extreme Makeover: 25,185 Days to a Better You and Superb Alternative Superlatives to Awesome and Amazing.
Laurie will be reading from her book tonight in Los Angeles, see details below. (Be sure to check out 826 LA's Echo Park Time Travel Mart next door.)
The book is available online from Amazon or Powell's.

Prussian scientist Baron Alexander von Humboldt explained aurora borealis and founded modern bio-geography. Less known however, is Humboldt's adventure to Spain's American colonies for what would become the greatest botanical expedition of all time. Now, at the 150th anniversary of Humboldt's death, the beautiful hardcover, "Alexander von Humboldt and the Botanical Exploration of the Americas," collects all primary records of his findings. Humboldt, together...
by Laura Neilson The Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, a goth perfumer, is the perfect blend of past and present. Present: The Los Angeles-based company, owned and founded by Beth Moriarty Barrial and partner Brian...
We've all mastered the emoticon, but design duo Brighten The Corners challenges the QWERTY keyboard's full graphic capabilities with their new book "Victor & Susie," a children's tale for adults illustrated completely from type. The 72-page, pocket-sized book is a study on how we perceive and read letters. By using third person narrative and equal proportions for both text and illustration, Brighten The Corners'...
Ever the fashion pundits, the French have extended their obsession for what is très chic by asking design legend and man behind the house of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, to design the 2009 issue of "Le Petit Larousse Illustrè." Translated in English as "Larousse Small Illustrated Dictionary," besides lending his artistic talents, Lagerfeld himself is included in the book's encyclopedia of proper names along with the...

A scrapbook of his California upbringing in suburban Orange County, this beautifully-designed volume...
Step outside your everyday human world and imagine, if you could, the life of two parasites living large. Such is the premise behind the "Sewing Stories Collection," five Brazilian children's books chronicling the shenanigans of a perfect couple (a mite and flea named Glauber and Hilda). Written by award-winning author Indigo, each book is illustrated by a famous Brazilian designer like Alexandre Herchcovitch, Rita...
