Cool Hunting
Helen Rödel is positively masterful at knitwear. The crocheted dresses made under her signature Rödel Latin America line are carefully constructed by hand, with no help or finishes done by a sewing machine whatsoever. This obvious dedication to quality that is only surpassed by the design of the dresses themselves is what makes her one of the most promising underground designers in Brazil I've seen so far this year.
Hailing from busy Porto Alegre in the south but actually born in the countryside, the pretty, sweet-mannered designer—who also models her own pieces on the brand's site—blurs the lines between urban and rural environments, making her collection ideal for a woman who easily flits between the two. Actually, this is today's very definition of a Brazilian woman, but it's a concept translated into apparel that has potential to jump borders.
Her 2008/2009 summer collection "Astro" channels the sun for energy in the light baby-doll dresses and inventive knit patterns. Her husband-slash-Rödel LA collaborator shot the vintage-looking photos, which add to the forever-classic aesthetic of the clothes (check the old-school poster for her previous collection).
The label's looking to be carried in stores outside of Brazil, but in the meantime, you can buy directly from Rödel LA through its online store or stop by B. Luxo's boutique in São Paulo.

We wanted to add this to our 2008 gift guide but regrettably even with the help of Google Translate we still couldn't figure out how to purchase this adorable kiddy poncho. (We're adding "learn Japanese" to the CH 2009 New Years Resolutions). Made by design group Sfera and handwoven in Finland, this is by the far the cuddliest little poncho we've seen made completely...
The most astonishing collection we saw at London Fashion Week back in September was "Pool Position" by Swedish designer Sandra Backlund. Since then we've been eagerly awaiting some images of these radically sculptural knits to share with you. Now these photographs by John Scarisbrick have arrived we are reminded of the fantastical structures that stopped us in our tracks a few months ago. Backlund...
With much excitement, we bring you an exclusive first look at AMP's new winter '08 collection. The São Paulo street clothing brand that can find no haters took action after encountering a few inspiring subjects. The designers turned to Claude Levi-Strauss' "The Raw and the Cooked," (a book explaining his theory for understanding mythology after his research on South American Indians), the world record...
Only a little more than six months old, Brecho Luxo is causing somewhat of a sensation with the fashion cult here in São Paulo. Founded by Paula Reboredo and Gil Franca, who run the São Paulo street fashion blog Freakstyle with journalist Maira Goldschmidt (that we told you about last year), opened the vintage store with a fabulously edited selection of clothes and accessories...
Based on the consistently fresh cuts and minimalist feel, you'd think AMP (A Mulher do Padre) was new to the scene. But the São Paulo-based label known for styles more akin to edgy Japanese brands is in its lucky 13th year already and only recently really beginning to gain ground with the factions they want to convert: 20- and 30-somethings who no doubt take...
Nearly 50 collections and a full week later, São Paulo Fashion Week closed yesterday with Ellus' 2nd Floor summer/winter 2008 line. (Pictured right.) An international brand built on its denim reputation, there's definitely a more youthful spirit in its sibling collection. The trends seen in the earlier shows—an abundance of sequins, metallics, neons, cuts and fabrics that played with movement, and solids, especially black—continued here...
