Marrakesh's Ksar Char Bagh Hotel by Tim Yu

The sophisticated Ksar Char-Bagh (pronounced Kuh-sah Chah Baah) is so serene that all guests at this 12-suite retreat in the Palmeraei area of Marrakech are likely to hear is the sound of water trickling and birdsong. Designed by French husband and wife, Nicole and Patrick Le Villair, this modern-day purpose-built palace is a triumph of grace and age-old architectural features. The palm-dotted Persian-inspired gardens, Moorish courtyards and pin-drop-peaceful natural-toned bedrooms have been luring the likes of Giorgio Armani of late.

Such classical decor and understated luxury might be lost on anyone looking for over-the-top opulence, but its an attention to quality and craftsmanship that makes this contemporary Moroccan hotel so special. Traditional intricate mosaic tiling makes a hammam room an extraordinary spot to get steamed and scrubbed. Meanwhile, ebony and camel bone-inlay furniture adds flourish to a polished marble monochrome main salon. The seclusion and discretion is a refreshing antidote to the sensory-overload of Marrakech's medina riads.

Adding to the holistic vibe is a fruit-and-vegetable garden which fuels the amazing Saturday lunches in a hacienda-like corner of the landscaped grounds. As for the origin of the hotel's name, it references the link between life and water which is depicted through a tiny glass-covered stream that leads guests through the through the hotel, past the fountain to this charming enclave.

The Grand has pulled off the rare feat of blending in completely with the city, making a stay in the hotel a perfectly subtle complement to one of the most exciting cities in the world. The hotel is constructed in the shell...
Quinta da Romaneira in Northern Portugal's Winelands
by Juliet Kinsman Cobbled and colonial but also contemporary and quirky, I recently had the chance to stay at the brand-new Douro Valley hotel, Quinta da Romaneira. From one look at the interior design it's clear that super-picky attention to detail is paramount. Thierry Teyssier, the creator of Quinta dos Sonhos (Romaneira's Portuguese name) considered every color, visualized every view, procured the highest spec...
Ross Lovegrove x Globetrotter: onehundred&ten
To celebrate their 110th anniversary, high-end luggage maker Globetrotter collaborated with one of the world's most futuristic designers to create a contemporary classic that could see the company through its next 110 years. Ross Lovegrove, the Welsh designer known for his fluid forms and experimentation with revolutionary materials, sought to create the world's most lightweight suitcase. Carbon fiber was the obvious choice but the...
Fuchun Resort in Hangzhou, China
By Juliet Kinsman We assume that many of the athletes and some spectators will be doing a bit of travel outside of Beijing after the Olympics. A three hour drive southwest of Shanghai on the outskirts of Hangzhou, we recommend staying at Fuchun Resort if you're in the area. Pronounced 'Foo-choo-win,' it's the ultimate antidote to bright lights and big cities. Designed by Jean-Michel...
